Hello and good day to all,

Hope someone can help me with this problem.

I've been trying to install Microsoft Office on my PC.
But I always get this Error Code,1402.
This is what the full saying says;

Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ OptionalComponents\MSFS.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel

I have the Certificate of Authenticity and Product Number.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thank-You,
Johngod

Try this.

First, backup the registry: See here: How to backup the registry in Windows Vista

Next, click Start, type regedit and press Enter
Navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS
Right click on the MSFS key in the left pane and select Permissions.
Select Everyone and give it Full Control.

Try the install again, see if it works now.

Hello Again,

I backed up my registry but still couldn't do the install,
Error 1402 still came up.

I did everything that I should of done until I got to
Select Permissions, Permission in MSFS, when you said select everyone and give it full control.
Everyone wasn't their and full control wouldn't let me highlight, either Allow or Deny.

Is their anything I was missing or should I try something different?

Thanks,
John

What version of Office are you trying to install?
Are you running from a Limited account or an Administrator account?

Are you using WebRoot Spysweeper? If so uninstall it and try again.

Also, download and install CCleaner from the following link: CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Start CCLeaner. Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

* Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
* Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

* Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

I'm not using webroot spysweeper.

I didn't run cleaner cause I wasn't sure if I should and what to check or uncheck on the left side.

I downloaded ccleaner but couldn't locate these items;

As for running CCleaner, what you uncheck depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to eliminate as much stuff as possible, leave it asis. As you can see from the above images, I uncheck quite a bit because those are things I don't want deleted.

Under Internet Explorer:
History - where I've been
Cookies - used by web sites to keep track of when I visited. Some people hate this, doesn't bother me.
Recently Typed URLs - fills in URL after only a few letters typed
Index.dat files - Speeds up searching of hard drive content. Used a lot in Windows 7
Last Download Location - helpful the next time I download something
Autocomplete Form History - not really sure what this one does but I uncheck it anyway
Saved Password - I want my passwords filled in automatically when I return to a site

Under Windows Explorer:
Recent Documents - files I've worked with recently
Run (in Start Menu) - self explanatory
Other Explorer MRUs - any other areas of WE that can maintain history of what I've done
Thumbnail Cache - saved generated thumbnails. Speeds up display of files and folders
Taskbar Jump List - recently opened programs list

Under System
Memory Dumps - never want to lose info that may help debug a problem
Windows Log Files - same as above
Rest below that already uncheck by default

Advanced
All unchecked by default

[attachment=52024:CC4.jpg]

Applications tab:
Firefox/Mozilla
Internet History, Cookies, Download History - all help me know where I've been and what I do

Applications
ImgBurn - remember info for discs I've burned
Office xxxx (any) - remember everything I've done in Office that can be remembered

Internet and Multimedia
Take defaults

Utilities
Acronis True Image - remember all backup info and settings
Malware Bytes - remember all info

Use CCLeaner to disable the following as they are not needed when the computer boots:

Yes HKCU:Run ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
Yes HKCU:Run swg "C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe"
Yes HKCU:Run MoneyAgent "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Money Express.exe"
Yes HKLM:Run igfxtray C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
Yes HKLM:Run igfxhkcmd C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
Yes HKLM:Run igfxpers C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
Yes HKLM:Run NeroFilterCheck C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
Yes HKLM:Run PDVDDXSrv "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD DX\PDVDDXSrv.exe"
Yes HKLM:Run Adobe Reader Speed Launcher "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
Yes HKLM:Run SunJavaUpdateSched "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
Yes HKLM:Run Adobe ARM "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"

This one is up to you, do you use Works Calendar Reminder? If yes, leave it. If not, disable it.

Yes Startup Common Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{9944aa9e-362d-11d3-81ab-00c04fb932ba}\1960F8A9.exe

As far as installed programs, I see these I would uninstall via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, but this is up to you:

Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer Google Inc. 1/9/2011 7.1.2003.1856
Java™ 6 Update 22 Oracle 7/10/2011 97.1 MB 6.0.220 (old - should be uninstalled)

These were all bundled with the computer, do you actually use any of them?
Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000 8/21/2011
Microsoft Expedia Streets & Trips 2000 Microsoft Corp. 8/20/2011 7.0.26.1700
Microsoft Home Publishing 2000 Microsoft Corporation 8/16/2011 50.1 MB 4.0.0000
Microsoft Money 2000 Standard Edition 8/20/2011

Setup CCleaner the way you want then run it to clean up the accumulated junk on your hard drive. You can run Analyze first to see what it will remove.

Next, open a Command Prompt window (Start / Run / type cmd and press Enter).
Type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter.
You will get this message:

C:\Users\xxxxxxxx>chkdsk c: /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by
process. Would you like to schedule this volume t
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Enter Y then reboot and let chkdsk run to completion. Can take an hour or more depending on the size of the hard drive.

Now try the install again.

I did everything you asked me to do,I think.

When I did the chkdsk, and restarted the PC I got the end session or cancel,
so I did end the session so the PC would come back on and when the PC came back on nothing happened,
with the chkdsk,it never ran.
Did I do something wrong?

So I did try the install again but it didn't work.

Sorry to be putting you though so much trouble.........

Did you disable the things I recommended?

Did you get the response I show when you entered chkdsk c: /r in a Command Prompt window? If yes, when you rebooted chkdsk didn't run and instead you got some error message about "end session or cancel". I don't know what that means or where you saw it. Can you provide the exact error message and when it appeared.

In any case, doing more searching I found this which may help: Error code 1402 cannot open the registry key.

Check out the Fix-It link and the microsoft support link.
