Just a note: I disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection to run Security Check. I've since enabled it.

While unattended...appears Windows Media Player popped up in an attempt to play a file (show_2573521) and a message popped up from that:

"An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help."

It then appears to have attempted downloading/installing a file (Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5) but stopped because "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."

Awaiting a user response to "OK", "Browse", or "Cancel", I clicked Cancel.

Hi!

Thanks for that information.

First things first. Lets update your out of date programs to the latest version, as having outdated versions is leaving the system wide open to vulnerabilities.

From the looks of your SecurityCheck log, I can see that we have some outdated programs that need to be updated.

Lets address those programs that need updating now!

Your SecurityCheck log indicates that your version of Flash Player is outdated. This is a vulnerability that needs to be addressed. Please remove the outdated version of Flash Player and then install the latest version.

Java Outdated

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform:
    • 32-bit Select: Windows x86 Offline.
    • 64-bit Select: Windows x64.
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
Alternative Option: after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here< Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

Two items up on the screen this morning:

1. A log-in box for "banner.missingkids.com". Log-in box I can only describe as what you'd expect when doing "remote log-ins". User name and Password and OK box, waiting for user input.

2. Windows Internet Explorer warning box.
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site
http://www.movietick...t.asp?ShowDate= blah-blah-blah..
Operation aborted.

Will begin the instructions on updating out of date programs ;) .

Hello,

I'm starting to think that the best thing to do with this computer is to nuke an reformat. As I'm not really seeing any signs of malicious entries in your logs, but it's possible malware has done some damage that I'm not able to see. A reformat and re-install would also help clear up these issues that you're describing and would also be a much quicker solution to getting this computer back up and running like it should be.

Let me know your thoughts,
ST.

You're not quiting on me NOW are you? ;)

If you're not seeing anything at this point and declare it clean, or we have some steps to wrap it up...that's fine w/ me.

If it flares up or comes back we'll re-image it here.

Yeah, I mean i'm not seeing anything apparently obvious in your logs. I'd like to have you take it for a test drive for a few days and post back then letting me if any issues arose during that time.
