Hello, and welcome to Geeks to go !

"Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update" may automatically fix your problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

On the Microsoft Webpage click on Fix Now

Let us know how that goes.

Sounds like your windows update service may be off, the fix it above should address it, if that is in fact the issue.

Silly question but:

Is Automatic Updates enabled? I would hope the Fixit would have addressed that possible issue. Lets check it ourselves.

You can do this by going to Start and typing in services.msc in the search box.
Next, press Enter and the Windows Services dialog will appear. Now scroll down until you see the Windows Update service, right-click on it and choose start. If the service is already started then obviously that's not the issue.

Lets look at instructions below as next step you can try.

There are two methods that can be used to download and install the System Update Readiness Tool. Please see link for complete instructions.

Odd to say the least,
That's why the Microsoft Fixit didn't work cause the service from what I see does not exist.
It's no wonder you can't up-update. How long has this been going on?

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, then type cmd in the Start Search box. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

Type this just as it appears with spaces net start wuauserv into the command window hit enter.

I doubt this will work but lets try it. Let me know.

Have you ever had Malware removed on this machine?

I expected as much. Looks like you're missing this registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv

Lets query the key and see if it's home.
Copy the bold line below with your mouse,
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv /s > junk.txt
notepad junk.txt

(space before junk.txt)

Using the command prompt window like you did above. Right click in the window and select Paste then Enter.

Notepad will open. Copy and paste that text from notepad in your next post.
Is that a 32Bit Vista?

Hi noobs,

Are you still with us? Have you made any progress? Running a Windows machine without updates being installed is a recipe for trouble!
