That has ruled out one nasty - thank you

Could you go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click the command prompt and select run as administrator
In the black box that pops up type in the following :

Sfc /scannow

Once it completes let me know if it found any errors

It said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.log"

Do you need me to post the CBS.log?

No need for the log as long as it repaired them

Could you now retry combofix please, allowing it to update

Once run what are the current problems

Combofix didn't work again. I ran it, it updated, and created the system repair point. Then it said it was scanning, which can take 10 minutes. It was still running when I went to bed, and when I woke up this morning, my computer had rebooted. There is a Log.txt in c:\, but it is 0 bytes, dated 12/7/11 12:33AM.

Still have the problem where something has spawned Internet Explorer. There are 4 instances in my Task Manager.

Did you have IE running at the time ?

This is definitely weird as I can see the pages that they are directing to in task manager - but as of yet I cannot see where they are being spawned from. I would like to work outside of windows for the next task

Please download the following programmes to your desktop:

Dr Web Live CD

ImgBurn

Install IMGBurn
  • Double click Dr Web
  • IMGBurn will open
  • Burn the ISO to a cd
  • Reboot the infected computer with the CD in the drive
  • Ensure that the first boot device is CD - If you are not sure about that then see this page for instructions
  • As loading starts, a dialogue window will prompt you to choose between the standard and safe modes.

    Posted Image
  • Use arrow keys to select DrWeb-LiveCD (Default)
  • When the system is loaded, check the disks or folders you want to scan, and click on “Start”.

    Posted Image
  • The programme will now scan for and cure/delete any malware that it finds. Allow it to do so
  • Once completed reboot to normal windows
  • No log is produced so once in normal windows run a fresh OTL scan and let me know if the problems persist

I have just discovered that it is a false alarm from AVG a virus database update should remove the warning

Unfortunately, the previous virus database might have detected the
mentioned virus on some legitimate applications. We can confirm that
it was a false alarm. We have immediately released a new virus update
that removes the false positive detection on this file. Please update
your AVG and check your files again.

If you need to restore deleted files from AVG Virus Vault you can do
it this way:
- Open AVG user interface.
- Choose "Virus Vault" option from the "History" menu.
- Locate the file that was incorrectly removed and select it (one
click).
- Click on the "Restore" button.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

In case that we can be of any further assistance, please do not
hesitate to contact us again.
Thank you.

Best regards,

Martin Valchev

However that still leaves the IE problem, so did you add anything to your host files that your are aware of ?

If not then run this quick fix and let me know if it resolves the problem

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

My problem seems fixed now. I don't see any weird internet explorers in my task manager. There was a weird IP address in my netstat, but I set the firewall to block it. I noticed before I ran the OTL fix, so if it happens again or comes back, then I'll try that fix.

Thank you so much for helping me!

Your host file was set as a redirector although the IP was in the USA. The host file is one area not checked by any AV or Antimalware product

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

  • Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones
  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
