Well, would you believe it! This morning is the first time I have switched on my PC since writing last night that the start up problem appeared to be fixed, and it reappeared once again.

I really don't know if it is worth continuing with a search for a remedy, I am in your hands, so I will just maintain a regularly updated clone file and wait for the inevitable end!

Incidentally, I might be just imagining it, but the time from the time the Windows opening screen appears to the time the desktop is loaded and ready to go, seems to be longer than usual. Can't be certain!

reboot and time the boot to a working desktop...if you don't have a watch or clock with a second hand...most cellphones have a stopwatch built in
also do this after timing your boot...
turn off lifecam
Click Start , type services.msc in the Start Search box...click on it

Double-click Logitech Process Monitor and the services related with the LifeCam.

In Startup type, select Disabled.

Under Service status, click Stop and then click OK

Close services and reboot timing the boot process again...

have you defragged recently...if not do so

May I also add, and you are more than welcome to wait for the opinion of my colleague happyrock that you also have AVS registry cleaner installed. and ashampoo win optimizer.

IMHO these programs are completely unnecessary on Windows 7.

They had little place on previous versions of Windows, but 7 is far better at managing its system than those previous versions and in my experience you will gain little if any benefit, but will most certainly risk ruining your system.

You also have AVG 2012 installed, if that is the full purchased program, that also includes a optimizer scan

I believe you may well notice a vast improvement if you were to uninstall the AVS registry cleaner, the ashampoo optimizer AND if it was me I would also uninstall the McAfee software you have, and the AVG2012, and again if it was me I would install Microsoft Security Essentials.
However, that is my opinion and not everyone likes MSE, but there are alternatives that are far less obtrusive than AVG and have a reputation for providing equal if not better protection whilst using less resources.

Thanks to you both for your replies. I am sorry that once again I was unable to reply more promptly.

Unfortunately, as mentioned in my ealier message ("BTW, at the end of next week I will be away for 3 to 4 weeks so any further attempts to solve this will have to be put on hold for that spell,") the time has come and we are leaving tomorrow morning to head North in search of better winter weather. Can we therefore close this thread temporarily and I will address these issues on my return home?

I hope this will be possible and if so, please advise what I will need to do to reopen a 'closed' thread.

Just a quick note to say that we have found some winter sunshine and as a result we are STILL away, enjoying the warmth of central Queensland.

I really must apologise for the delay in writing again. The truth is that we have in fact been home for a couple of weeks now, but as you can no doubt imagine, after such a long absence, there really has been more than enough to fill my time around the house and garden. I am only now seeing a way to return to the troubleshooting operation. (I am glad to say the lengthy interstate trip was just magnificent, taking us to many wonderful places we had not previously visited, and being our first 'post-retirement' road trip it has whetted the appetite for more travel.)

I will address the issues raised in your last post very soon and write in a day or two,
