I'm due to recieve my new HTC One S. However I am interested as to if I can install Stock Android (instead of HTC Sense) so that the phone is more like the Nexus.

Is this possible? Do I need to root the phone to do so?

You can choose a custom firmware instead of the classic stock Android. I have installed the ParanoidAndroid ROM using this tutorial. The phone is stable and apparently faster that with the official stock ROM. I suggest you to try this version. If you don't like it, you can get back to the original ROM.
