I opened msconfig, and there's nothing under Startups at all.

OK that is very unusual.

Lets see what you have in your startup services area

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Services
Click on the Hide All Microsoft Services
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

After hiding Microsoft Services, there's nothing on the Services tab either. Besides the utilities I've installed to solve this problem, I haven't installed any software since reinstalling Windows. Would that not be the reason for a lack of things under startups and services?

No there are default programs and startup that should be there.

Please do the following for me.

Push and hold the Windows key on keyboard. This is the one with the Microsft windows logo on it.
While holding Win key down click on the Pause\Break key

This should open the System properties window
On this window it will show

System info:

Microsoft Windows: type and version
Service Pack number

Registered Name
Register Number

Computer:
CPU type
Memory
I need all the above info in your next reply Except for Register name and number.
This is private and we don't need to know this information

Windows 7 Professional

Service Pack--None. I haven't installed any updates since reinstalling the OS as it's not convenient right now to connect that computer to the internet. I can probably do so though if it's necessary to fix the problem. Once I get moved and have internet service set up at the new apartment, that won't be an issue.

CPU--AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.80 GHz

RAM--3 GB

OK what about all original drivers for the motherboard?
Also is this the HP branded OS installation disk you are using?
There should have been a drivers disk also.

My apologies for not having responded before now. I just moved into my new apartment, and I don't have internet there yet. I'm stuck using school internet until then.

I am indeed using an HP branded OS disc for installation.

I don't have a driver disc, though I think I can probably get the drivers from the HP website. I haven't installed them yet.

I checked the website, and I don't see any motherboard drivers, and everything they do have is for Vista.

Not a problem and just a couple of suggestions.
First is to update your OS with SP1 as this is a security risk.
Second getting the original drivers will help out a lot and then from there you can update them normally by using Windows Update page. Any that don't update may be updated through HP or a 3es party.

Vista drivers may work since they are close enough for Win7.
