the only problem I do have is IE not remembering passwords or log in details, plus having to choose a default search provider everytime


Is IE throwing an error message before it makes you choose a search provider? If so, could you please post the contents of that message.

When first opened a message comes up saying I must choose a default search provider, do I want to choose one now? If I click ok or cancel this box still opens up

As you can see it says google is already default but doesnt let me change anything??

Hi --

Take a look at this product here. It comes highly recommended as an extra layer of security for your online banking transactions. It comes highly recommended.
It tries to make sure that you don't log into a fake phishing site pretending to be a bank. It's a good option if it is compatible with your bank.

Step 1
For the password and user id issue with IE, please check the autocomplete settings
Click on the Start Orb
Click on Control Panel
Click on Network and Internet
Click on Internet Options
Once there at Internet Options, click on the content tab
Now in the Autocomplete section click on Settings button
Make sure the box is checked for User Names and Passwords on forms

Click on ok until you are out of there.

Now see if it remembers passwords correctly

Step 2

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot perform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Download ERUNT
    (ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
    (use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
    (either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
    (the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.

We need to do an OTL fix:

Note: If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or higher installed please disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below. If it still hangs then please uninstall MalwareBytes' and run this fix again.
Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :commands
[createrestorepoint]
:reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes]
"DefaultScope"="{67A2568C-7A0A-4EED-AECC-B5405DE63B64}"
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Now, how is IE behaving in relation to the search engines?

IE is working ok, I've run the above tasks IE remembers logins etc now but still has the search provider problem and this shows up first

Hi,
Just be clear, you have clicked on OK on that error message and tried to select the default search provider, correct?

I need another OTL custom scan to take a good look at a few parts of your system:

Run OTL --
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

baseservices

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open OTL.Txt
  • Post this log in your next response

Hi,
while I look that log over and research some other stuff,
Please click on the Start Orb,
Type Internet Options in the search box and press enter.
Click on the Programs tab.
Click on the Manage Addons button.
When the Manage addons box opens up click on Search Providers over on the left
Check the box Prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provider.
Click on Close and OK.

Did that stop the search provider error from occuring?

No, it hasn't worked. When that opens each time IE opens that box is back 'unchecked'

Hi,
I would like you to try this program for your Internet Explorer issue --
Please download the program Windows Repair (all in one) from this site
Install the program and run it
Posted Image
Go to the start repairs tab and click start.
It will offer to set a restore point, and to back up the registry, please allow it to do so.
On the repair options screen I would like you to uncheck the following options:
  • Repair MDAC & MS Jet
  • Repair Hosts File
  • Repair Missing Start Menu Icons Removed By Infections
  • Repair Icons
  • Repair Windows Sidebar/Gadgets
  • Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
  • Repair Windows Snipping Tool
  • Repair .lnk (Shortcuts) File Association
  • Repair Windows Safe Mode

Leave all the others checked, tick the Restart/Shutdown System when finished box and click Start

Let me know the outcome of this fix please.

Just to let you know, I am in the path of hurricane Sandy, so I expect to lose my power sometime today. I am not real sure when I will get it back, but I will strive not to leave you hanging too long.

IE is still the same, I take it there isn't any malicious software/viruses on my pc?

Don't worry about your response time, you have more important issues than me at present, I hope everything ends up ok

Hi,
I don't see any malware on your system, but I would love to see your internet explorer working properly before I remove my tools and tidy up.

I would like to see what happens when you try the following.
Click on the start orb
Click on Accessories
Click on System Tools
right click on Internet Explorer (no add ons) and select Run As Administrator

Do you still get the error message as before?

Hi --
This is a tough one isn't it?
I think you should uninstall IE9 at this point, and re-install it. Uninstalling it in your case will leave you with IE8 installed, and should retain all of your favorites.
You should export all of your favorites as a backup before uninstalling it.
You can back them up by opening up IE and selecting File > Import Export
Tick Export to a file and click Next.
Select Favorites, and if you want to back you your feeds and cookies, select those as well.
Make sure your Favorites folder is selected and again click Next
Save the file in a location where you can locate it later and click on Export.
Now exit IE
Next --
Click on the Start Orb Posted Image, type Programs and Features in the search box, and then click View installed updates in the left pane

Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.

Right-click Windows Internet Explorer 9, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.

Click on Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 9 and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).

After the restart, please click here to go the the Download page for IE9 - you will want the Windows 7 64 bit version.

Let me know if that solves this issue.

Nope, thats still the same. I uninstalled then reinstalled with and without the bing and msn add ons to see if that made a difference but its still the same :confused:

Ok, I would like to see if this error occurs for all the user accounts on your computer.
Is yours the only user account?
If not, please log in to another user account and try the browser.
If you are the only user, please create another one and give the browser a try.
Creating another user account:
To open User Accounts, click the Start button Posted Image, click Control Panel, and under the heading User Accounts and Family Safety click on Add or remove user accounts
On the next screen click on Create a New Account.
Type a name for this account, and select Administrator
Click on the Create Account button

Now you can log off Windows by clicking on the Start Orb Posted Image
Click on the little triangle to the right of the search box and select log off from that menu.
Log on to the account you just created and try IE9
