I would like to upgrade my laptop Vista to Windows 8, before passing it onto my son.

As the laptop was secondhand to me I do not have any original Vista software on disc etc.

If in any future requirement to rebuild the laptop OS would it be possible to do it with only the Windows 8 Upgrade software?.

Any help appreciated by a Septuagenarian

Since you can do a clean install with a upgrade version of Windows 7, I think the same will be true of Windows 8.

Many thanks for your reply.

I have a slightly different question, but related.

My DT PC has been upgraded from WXP to W7 using a Home Premium Full Edition DVD which I purchased.

Is it possible/legal to upgrade the DT/W7 to W8 and then use the W7 Home Premium Full Edition to upgrade the LT/Vista?

Regards

I don't think it's legal. Maybe one of the Windows MVP folks can answer this. I'll ask and see if I can find a definitive answer for you.

Having said that. I believe you can uninstall the retail copy of Windows 7, put XP back then upgrade from XP to Windows 8 since that is a valid upgrade path.

We'll wait for the legal beagles to post on this though.

Just like windows xp a windows 7 license can only be in use on one computer at a time. When you use a license asproof of upgrade eligibility you occupy that license
