This computer doesn't have wireless capability and we have no dopples, just internal wireless cards.

This computer has always been hardwired into the router, so I tried to bypass the ethernet cable I've been using which I noticed is very old and shotty and used the cable that feeds the router to go from modem right to my computer and it seemed like that solved the problem because I was getting faster service, but after surfing a while, it slowed down again.

Trying a wireless dongle is the quickest and most surefire way of ruling the present ethernet card in or out as the cause of this so it is a pity that you cannot borrow one.

In case it is browser related try temporarily disabling the FF plug ins and add ons http://support.mozil...-remove-add-ons

Thanks, IE has the same slow internet issue. All plugins are already disabled in FF.

Sorry I couldn`t do more, hopefully rockmilk will see something that I have missed.

Open your device manager hit the start button then right click on computer then select properties then select device manager.

In device manager, click the View menu and select Show hidden devices

Then hit view again and select devices by connection.



Then scroll down right click and uninstall the drivers listed below,dont worry these will be reinstalled upon reboot by windows.



Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock or AFD
Http
Ip NetWork Adress Translator
IpSec Driver
Netbios over tcpip
Tcp/ip Protical Driver



Each of these files will request a reboot after uninstall wait until the last one to reboot.



Open your copy of ccleaner and then hit the tools button and the start up button and disable all items except Microsoft Security Essentials.
Close CCleaner.


Open your device manager and then scroll down to the network adapters.
Hit the + sign to the left of them right click and select un install for the Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection reboot the machine.

Optimize your dns with DNS jumper.

Run hit the fastest dns button
Allow it to finsh
Then hit apply dns.
Close the program.

Thanks, those steps are completed.

The connection to the internet is still very slow.

Also, I have the two screens icon in my status bar with the yellow plus sign going back and forth. It's the connection status telling me that it is aquiring network address. It's stuck there - it never says connected. I am able to connect, though with the usual slow loading of pages.
Plus, my MSE is not working now. I made sure not to disable it in ccleaner.
If I hit start it gives me the following message:
Couldn't start the Security Essentials service
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
Click help for more information about this problem.
Error code: 0x80070424

Before posting in operating systems, I went through a week of cleaning this pc in the malware forum and at the end, the suggestion was to uninstall Avast and instead, use MSE and Win Patrol.
Now you are saying to go get rid of these and go back to Avast so I am confused. Why do you think Avast is better than the other two programs?

There is nothing wrong with MSE - I and many other security experts recommend and use it. I've found it to be light on resources, and it has no ads or popups trying to get you to buy it, as it's only offered as a free product. I don't think that MSE is causing any of your internet issues, but the error message you're currently getting with it could be indicative of a couple of different things. If you would like to stick with MSE, then we can troubleshoot the current issue. It's possible that there are still remnants of Avast on your PC, which could be causing conflicts. If you want to make sure it's all gone, you could download and run the Avast Uninstaller Utility. If that doesn't fix it, uninstall MSE, reboot, then reinstall it.

If you don't wish to troubleshoot the issue, then continue with rockmilk's instructions, but the choice of antivirus is up to you.
