A 8 year old drive could be suspect, but does not necessarily have to be the issue.
Have you run the Samsung drive diagnostics? Download it from this link. Drive Testing Tools

If you don't have a burning program that will burn .ISO files get burncdcc from my signature below ..a small FAST no frills iso burning program..
Burbcdcc

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you

1. Start BurnCDCC
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start

Have you run the error checking on the drive?
Go to Start/ My Computer/ right click on C drive/ choose properties/ choose tools tab/ choose error checking
