Tried Windows Update. It attempted to update 6 files. All failed to install. Errors found were code 656 and Code 80070643

Sorry Ron, do you want me to type vssadmin delete shadows /all into Command Prompt, then reboot and then reopen Command Prompt and paste the copied text?

No need to reboot tho you can if you want to. Just make sure you right click on Command Prompt and Run As Admin.

That prompted a whole deluge of messages - some saying that the module had loaded successfully but many others saying the operation had failed. I don't know whether I did something wrong. I ran Command Prompt as administator and typed in vssadmin delete shadows /all. Then copied and pasted the rest of the text which duly appeared. The mass of messages appeared when I hit enter.

Yes Windows update still failing.

I've remembered I've got a Windows Repair Disk which I made a couple of years back when I had a Windows related problem. Any point in running that or would that make things worse?

Worth a shot. If you had data you can't afford to lose, best to back it up before you try it. (If nothing else send it to yourself in an email using gmail.)
