It was working fine before but I just turned on my laptop and the sound wasn't playing through my headphones. I unplugged it, tried another pair of headphones, ran a Windows Update. I also checked my "Audio Devices" and there was no headphones there. I am completely lost.

Just to rule the headphones out have you tried them on any other equipment for example an amp or a portable cd player etc?

This is a stupid question I know but you didn't plug them into the Mic socket by accident did you?

In Sound in control panel tell us what is listed under the Playback Tab.
