Hi, My ‘content’ information now shows that I do seem to have had a ‘slip of the cursor’ and I apologise for that. It is indeed the same subject.

I would like to point out at this point that there does seem to be a slight technical issue regarding my posts as I have just had the same problem as I had with the image upload in the Win7 forum which was that there was nothing to tell me that the image had uploaded, thus the repeats.

Before writing this I tried to post a slightly different version but it ‘didn’t appear’ and so I am writing it again as I hadn’t saved it. I wouldn’t be surprised if you get both though. Hopefully not.

I will have to leave it to you as to what to do about this confusion. I don’t know if you can tag the relevant posts from here onto the Win7 postings but another option is that I post an explanation onto the Win7 forum as to what action I have taken for those who might be watching. I presume you could then delete this.

At the moment I am acting on the advice of ‘Ztruker’ which was a useful piece of information (Downloading the OS). I didn’t know about this but it does change the subject somewhat from a ‘reset’ to a ‘clean install’ though it may be a preferred choice for others who were not aware of it. Please advise.

Steve.

Apologies for the delayed reply :(

Try running SFC on the C: drive;

Have your Windows 7 Ultimate DVD to hand in case it is needed and then follow the instructions below:
  • Click on Start and select Search... type sfc /scannow (note the space) (Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away)

SFC
- Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If you want to see what was replaced, right-click My Computer and click on Manage. In the new window that appears, expand the Event Viewer (by clicking on the + symbol next to it) and then click on System.

It is some times necessary to run SFC 3/4 times for it to be able to repair all errors.

BTW the HDD looks as it should, the OEM partition is the Dell diagnostic tools in case you were not already aware.

Hi Phil, I'm afraid I messed up some how by posting in the XP section. Not really sure how it happened but I received some advice as you will see (link below) which relates to a clean install which I wasn't aware of. I am just updating the PC now (139 updates) then I will see if everything is as it should be in terms of still having 'reset' as an option. I am interested to know what 'SFC' means though. Thanks.

Good evening Steve

I may also have suggested downloading a Windows 7 ISO but did not do so as your OP requested assistance with restoring the notebooks factory default settings which are on the Recovery Partition + you already have a Windows 7 DVD, unless there is something wrong with the disk that you already have you would have no need for a downloaded ISO, no problem however if the issue gets resolved one way or another

Hi Phil, No disk with the laptop. Seems to be the way they save money, even so all the drivers and updates have to be rooted out. I presume that wouldn't be as bad with a factory reset. Just hoping I'll be able to access the recovery partition when I've done in case my Ma goes wild with it again.

Thanks anyway.

Once the issue is resolved, the Dell drivers reinstalled and the OS fully updated I suggest that you make a back up image of the HDD as a safeguard/for possible future use, I recommend Macrium Reflect(free)for this.

NB: Be sure to reinstall the Dell drivers in the correct order.

Not sure what you are doing but there is a definite indication when the file is uploaded.

G2GUpload.jpg

Click Browse to find the file to upload.
Click Attach This File to upload it.
The uploaded file name then appears in a box under Attachments. Click Add to Post to the right of the name to insert into the reply you are working on.

Not the best as far as intuitive use but it works.

I am thinking that the best solution might be to merge the two topics to the Win7 forum.

That way everyone involved will keep in touch with all advice given and received.

Alternatively we can just close the current Win7 forum one and I can move this topic to the correct forum.

Tell me what you would like done. :)

Hi emeraldnzi, Yes merging them is perhaps best but do you mean this is something you could do by transferring these posts or do you just mean I should add information to the end of the win7 posts? The laptop seems to be working fine now.

No need for you to do anything. :)
