Read here: Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update, see if that helps.

I've tried this website before and everytime I run the "Fix-it" program it comes back with the same failed message "Service Registration missing or corrupt". Don't know where to go from here.

Hi barneyhelper,
I found your other thread here. I see that you reinstalled the XP OS around the first of November. From what I see in the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) log that RKinner had you post here, it appears that the Security Update for Windows XP (KB2868038) had installed along with several other updates that day as found under the One Month Created Files and Folders section of the log.
2013-11-02 11:31 - 2013-11-02 11:31 - 00000000 __HDC C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB2868038$
Because so many updates had installed at that time, there's a possibility of that particular update having become corrupt during the installation process and Windows doesn't see it as a successful install, hence, the update being re-offered.
What you could try is the following:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Allow the programs and updates to populate. Make sure that the little box to the left of Show updates is selected.
Now, once all the programs and updates are populated, scroll down to Windows XP - Software Updates and in the list look for the Security Update for Windows XP (KB2868038). Click on that particular update and choose Remove.
Reboot your computer to make sure the changes took effect.
Now, reinstall the individual update from here.
Reboot your computer and try Windows Updates to see if the update is offered again.
Please let us know the results.

I recently formatted and re-installed Windows XP Home edition on my DELL 9100 computer. I then worked with a tech to clear my drive of malware/spyware/etc..

Hi Donna,
Tried your suggestion and deleted and re-installed KB2868038 but it still shows up as a new update when running Windows Update.
Not sure what else to try.

Ok. After extensive research concerning that particular update I see many are having issues with it. Is that the only one that is giving you problems?
Disable Automatic Updates by clicking on Change Settings found under Options. You will have to scroll down to find Options in the left side panel.
Reboot your computer and go back and turn Automatic Updates back on.
If that doesn't prevent the update from being offered again, you can click on the description of that particular update and check the Hide this update box underneath the patch description.
Keep me informed to your progress.

Hi Donna,
I tried turning off Automatic Updates, rebooting and then turning Auto Updates back on but this didn't change anything. I did not see a box to check under the description of the update "Hide this update", but discovered an explanation icon that essentially said that this update had been downloaded to my computer but needed to be downloaded again to complete.
I aslo checked the update history and noticed that this update download fails when downloaded by Automatic Updates but is suceesful when manually downloaded using "Windows Update". The error code under "failures" when installed under "Auto Updates" is 0x80246008.
So as it appears now, the KB2868038 update is the only one that is trying to install under Automatic Updates and fails, but can be manually installed sucessfully under Windows Update, over and over again.
Any of this helpful?

Hi Donna,
I may have discovered what is causing all my problems. I ran services.msc and found that the Background Intelligent Transfer Services "BITS" is not running and when I try to start it, I get an error code 1290: 0x50a.
Without BITS, the Automatic Updates will not work. Now need to find a way to get BITS running.

Try this: How do I reset Windows Update components?
If that doesn't help, give Windows Repair All-In-One a try. It will take awhile to run so be patient.

Hi Member 5K,
Tried both suggested websites, neither worked to solve my problem, when trying to start BITS under services.msc still get error code 1290: 0x50a.
