Have removed and re-installed SP3. I now can start BITS from services.msc but get error code 0x80240001 when going to Windows Update website. Also, if I reboot, BITS is turned off and have to manually turn back on.

Also cannot figure out how to get correct driver for SM bus. I have noticed that whenever I open device manager the page flickers like it is refreshing itself (never seen this before). I've tried numerous times to update the driver for SM bus but have been unsuccessful.

What is the make and model of your machine?

If you are unable to determine that then the tool below should help.

Download UnknownDeviceIdentifier
http://www.zhangduo....eIdentifier.exe
and post the log it Creates in your next reply.
Run the program allow it to finish then hit file> save > Save the file to desktop. The default file name will be DeviceList Attach Device list in your next reply.

Also since you have a fresh sp3 you may re-run the all in one repair tool with the settings below.

Download the All in one Repair Tool Run the program vista/win 7 users please right click and run as admin. Go to step 4 and create a backup of your registry this tool involves changing registry keys and it is just a good idea to bak it up.Now go to the start repairs tab and run it with the following boxes checked. When running this tool disable your antivirus.

Attaching the devicelist file you requested. Also in the meantime I received Automatic Update icon and launched same several times where it downloaded several updates except one "KB2863058" which fails after several attempts.

UPDATE!!!

Automatic Update keeps showing two updates, KB2868038 (which it indicates that it installs) and KB2863058 (which it indicates that it fails). When I run services.msc, it shows Automatic Updates started and BITS started. I can no longer access Windows Update from my computer.

At this point I feel like I'm back where I started.

DO YOU STILL WANT ME TO RUN ALL-IN-ONE?

Here is your driver you need the xp32bit version.
Install it.
http://www.pcpitstop...ler~-~27DA.html

As far as the all in one yes re-run it as suggested with only the items ticked that I suggested.

If the all in one fails then try the .netframework repair tool.
http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=30135

Restart after running and then try and install manually.

http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=40497
http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=39783

Some more info on your issue...

http://support.micro.../976982#method2

Finally if all of the above fails then I suggest this.

Update the machine to IE 8 since the service pack was removed then most likely so was IE 8.
https://www.microsof...-8-details.aspx

Download the Windows update agent.
http://download.wind...Agent30-x86.exe

Save the download to your C: drive.

Hit the windows key and R at the same time.

In the Run box.

Type::

C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

and then click OK,install WU agent

Restart the PC and try to update the machine.

Instructions for last part of my post taken from here.

Ran the driver update for SM BUS and it apparently worked. Device Manager now shows everything OK, except the window still flickers and I didn't have that before I re-installed XP.

Ran All-In-One and stillhave update problem except I can now open Windows Update. Update still shows the two files KB2863058 and KB2868038, installs KB2868038 and fails KB2863058.

Will try your remaining suggestions tomorrow.

As far as the screen flicker issue I would like you to visit the site below and install all it offers.
http://www.intel.com.../support/detect

Also follow the steps below.

  • Hit the Start button then.
  • Right Click My computer
  • Properties
  • Harwdare Tab
  • Device Manager.
  • Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
  • Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers.
  • There most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers!!
  • Make sure and un-install All of them prior to rebooting.
  • Reboot the machine.
  • Another request will be made to reboot after the initial.
  • Reboot again.

Ran all the suggestions, still have same problem with KB2863058 (fails) and KB2868038 (repeats).
When trying to install Windows Update Agent, I get a message that it is already installed. When I try to run the file it can't find it. I tried searching C:\ for the windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe file and it could not be found.

I tried to resolve screen flicker problem per your instructions and it didn't work. I did not get a second request to reboot as you said, instead Windows found new hardware and installed drivers for same after first reboot.

Any further instructions?

Windows update works as donna b suggested earlier in the thread why not just hide the update.

As far as the screen flicker issue why not attempt to adjust the screen resolution.
http://www.howtogeek...n-crt-monitors/

If that does fail to fix the screen flicker issue then go back to the restore point I had you create.

Hi rockmilk,

Really appreciate all your help on this problem. Things are a little hectic around here. My wife has been ill and had to check her in to hospital yesterday for tests. She should be discharged today for the holiday and return later for additional testing. Will try your suggestions as time allows.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hi rockmilk,

Well I did the following and system appears OK except for a few exceptions:
I ran All-In-One, then ran MalwareBytes (found 40 optionals and deleted), then ran All-In-One again.

Still have the refresh problem in Device Manager, Have two icons for Network Connections in Control Panel, Have a shortcut icon for FixDotNet20131127180322531 folder on Desktop (created 11/29/13, 1.19Mb) and when running services.msc it shows Automatic Updates started and BITS not started.

I'm not getting the update icon in my lower task bar anymore but have not tried Windows Update.

Also, I could not figure out how to hide the two updates KB2868038 and KB2863058 before running the above.

Any suggestions for what I should do next?
