Hi Sleepy Dude
My microsoft security appears to be on & up to date but the options on my settings tab were different than pictured. There is only one box (turn on real time protection) and it was checked. The options on the left side are slightly different, as last option isn't Micro-soft SpyNet but MAPS. Everything appears up to date however as virus & spyware definitions are updated automatically.

Hi,

That's OK the appearance depends on the version and OS. The important part is the update and Real-time protection On.

Sleepy Dude -

when clicking on the adobe link I get the following -

"Your Google Chrome browser already includes Adobe® Flash® Player built-in. Google Chrome will automatically update when new versions of Flash Player are available.

To download the Adobe® Flash® Player system plug-in, click here. For instructions on how to enable it, click here.

Do you have a different operating system or browser?

To learn more about the enhanced support for Flash Player in Chrome, including information for developers, see this TechNote."

Is this update still necessary?

Yes, But only for Internet Explorer and Firefox. You need to use those browsers to update, the web page will detect the browser you have and will offer only the correct update for the specific browser.

If I only use chrome, do I still need to update IE & firefox or can these browsers be removed?

You can't remove Internet Explorer without breaking the Operating System because it's heavily integrated, to make sure the OS isn't vulnerable it's recommended to keep Internet Explorer and the Flash Player for IE updated. If you don't use Firefox I recommend to uninstall.

I've had an adobe reader update request in my tool bar (by the clock) requesting update version 10.1.2. I haven't done update however because I wasn't sure if it was legit. can I use this prompt to update reader?

The update notification is legit but the version you have is old and in the end the auto update feature of Adobe Reader will advise you to install version 11.
You can avoid extra steps if you uninstall Adobe Reader and then install the latest version available on the Adobe web site, presently the last version is 11.0.06.

defrag done and everything seems to be running well. I'd like to run another virus check before activating a spyware - can you recommend which to use?
thanks again for your patience in this process.

Good. I don't think you need to install a anti-spyware program you have Malwarebytes installed use it to do a scan weekly don't forget to make sure the program is updated by clicking on the Check for Updates button located on the tab Update.

Hum strange, use the Control Panel to uninstall Malwarebytes then follow my instructions from post #15 Step 2 to reinstall the program and run a scan.

Please post the log if the program report that something malicious was found.

SD,
I uninstalled and re installed it twice. Right after finishing the set up & un-checking the box saying start free trial, a small pop up appears from "Malwarebytes anti-Malware" saying -

"run time error 2147417848(80010108)automation error object invoked has discontinued from it's client"

The box has a yellow triangle with an "!" and gives the option of selecting "OK" or "X" to close the dialogue box.

I realized earlier today my son used the machine and tried downloading utorrent program. I immediately removed the program and machine seems to function fine but wondering if this may be causing the problem with malwarebytes? Regardless, he has been banned from using this machine anymore!

thank you again

Hi,

That is the problem with installing software not recommended by us until the machine is considered clean...

We need to get fresh logs to see what is going on...

Step 1 - Custom OTL Scan

  • Double-click OTL Icon Posted Image on the Desktop to start the program. Make sure all other windows are closed.
    Posted Image
  • Do not change any other settings and tick only the following check box's:
    • Scan All Users
    • LOP Check
    • Purity Check
  • on the Extra Registry group make sure you click the option Use SafeList <--- Important!
  • on the Posted Image box paste this:
    netsvcs
    BASESERVICES
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    services.*
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    dir "%systemdrive%\*" /S /A:L /C
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Posted Image button. Let the program run uninterrupted, the scan won't take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open notepad with OTL.Txt and another with Extras.txt. The files are saved on the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the full contents of both files and post in your topic.

Things I would like to see in your next reply:
  • The New OTL.txt and Extras.txt logs

Hi Kolchak,

Your last log show errors related to the Hard Drive, I would like to check the HDD health by booting the system from a CD with the tool provided by Samsung to test the Hard disk.
This is a very small CD (3MB) it's recommended to use a blank CD or CD-RW media if you want to reuse the disk for something else later.

Step 1 - Download and Burn CD

  • Download the file HDDSansung.exe
  • Insert the blank disk on the CD/DVD drive
  • Double click the exe file you download to execute the tool and click Yes on the prompt Do you want to burn the CD?
  • On the Write Speed box of the ImgBurn program select a low speed like 4x
  • Restart the computer with the CD on the drive and make sure the BIOS is set to boot from CD.
  • after boot from the CD you will see a screen like this:
    Posted Image
  • press Y
  • on the next screen highlight your Samsung Hard Disk and press Enter
  • from the menu select Tool > Self Diagnostic
  • after a quick test the tool will ask if you want to do a Surface Scan Test
    Posted Image
  • press Y and let the scan run.
  • during the scans the tool will list the detected problems.
Let me know the result.
