To start off I ran Symantec Check online and got a message I am infectected with above worm. The file they say is infected doesn't exist on my computer though. I ran Symantec again, and same results. I did an advanced search for file, and came up empty. The file name only exists in 2 text/log files. I made sure to search hidden files. This is copy of Symantecs message.

39392 files scanned, 1 file(s) infected on your disk drives.

No viruses were detected in memory.

Your computer is infected with at least one known virus or Trojan horse.

Search for the name of the threat(s) listed below on the Symantec Security Response site for removal information.

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

I would be happy to help you out...the first thing I need you to do is decide if you want Norton Anti-virus or McAfee - it is not a good idea to run both at the same time. Uninstall one of those and I'll be back as soon as possible.

I don't have both on my computer. I have McAfee because I have found it to catch more virusses than Norton. But periotically I go to Symantec website and run there virus check from there website. Norton and McAfee don't pick up the same virusses sometimes, I wish they did. Thank you for offering to help. It just blows my mind that it is saying I have an infected file, and yet the file doesn't exist.

Your log is in fact showing that you have Norton Anti-virus on your computer, those entries are not just from an online scan. Go into Add/Remove programs and remove:

Norton Anti-virus

It is there.

Please follow all instructions exactly as specified. I would advise printing them out so you're sure to follow all instructions.

Copy the below instructions (until you get to the purple text). Paste them into notepad and save it for use while in Safe Mode. This is important because it has to be done exactly in order for this to work

I need you to reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

After getting into Safe Mode, Go to Start > Run type in:

cmd

Click OK.

A black window will open up.

Copy the below line, exactly, and paste it into the black window:

attrib -h -r -s C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Hit Enter.

When it goes to the next line, copy the below line, exactly, and paste it into the black window:

del C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Hit Enter.

Then type exit

[END OF INSTRUCTIONS TO COPY FOR SAFE MODE]

Reboot into normal mode.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in Internet Explorer, it's "Save Target As") in order to download the fixrdriv.reg file. Save it to your deskop.

Locate fixrdriv.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

After the "merged successfully" prompt, please do the following:

* Download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys
C:\WINDOWS\ItunesMusic.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wkssvc.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the "PendingRenameOperation" prompt. If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Now, make sure your firewall is on.
Go to Start > Run - type:

firewall.cpl

Click OK.

Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

Download, install, and run CleanUp!

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

I actually went to add/remove programs just to make sure, and it isn't there. I have norton systemworks and norton goback, but I was sure not to install norton antivirus.

I am going to follow your directions now. Thank you so much for your time, I'll be back to let you know if it works.

Might want to be careful with the P2P programs....
Looks like Ewido didn't like some of the stuff downloaded :tazz:

Your log is actually looking pretty good! One last thing, then we'll check your log one more time ;)

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

Workstation Service Library

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

Microsoft Locator Service

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

Post a new HiJackThis log.

It is definitely improved, still running a little slow at times though. I ran the Panda Activescan again and it still is comming up with one infection. Here is the report:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows Registry

Doesn't tell a whole lot, but I guess it is still some remains of adware in my registry?
I do have some off topic questions, they are about Web Databases. Do you know anything about them, and if not, can you point me in the right directio? Is there a better forum to ask questions about them?

I am so so so pleased with the time you have taken for me and will donate to you. My computer is going to be my source of income soon, once I learn how to build web databases. But until I complete that first job I don't have much.

Thank you,
Dan

It's slow because you have a bunch of stuff on startup. We can certainly remove some optional items from startup to speed up your system! Let me know if you would like to do this!

I ran the Panda Activescan again and it still is comming up with one infection.  Here is the report:
Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows Registry

This will not harm your system at all. It is a leftover registry entry that is randomly generated (changes from computer to computer) so there is absolutely no way to find it. There are no associated files so it's absolutely nothing to worry about.

I do have some off topic questions, they are about Web Databases.  Do you know anything about them, and if not, can you point me in the right direction?  Is there a better forum to ask questions about them?

I don't know a thing about them, but after we finish here I can refer you to another board on Geeks to Go who will be able to help you :tazz:

I am so so so pleased with the time you have taken for me and will donate to you.  My computer is going to be my source of income soon, once I learn how to build web databases.  But until I complete that first job I don't have much.

Well that's very sweet of you to do! Thank you! I'm happy I was able to help ;)

Ok I would like to go ahead and remove some of the things at start up. Speeding it up would be nice. I figured with an Athlon 3000+ it wouldn't make that much difference, but I'm trusting in you.

Make sure to keep HiJackThis (so you still have the backups) that way if you decide you want something back on startup we can put it back very easily. :tazz:

My comments are in red. If you would rather something stay on startup, don't put a check next to it.

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\VERIZO~1\SUPPOR~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe
System tray icon for the Virtual Assistant from Broadband ISP, used to communicate internet problems via the network rather than telephone. Available via desktop shortcut or Start > All Programs - not required.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
This entry is for Norton Anti-virus (which means it is installed on your system), but since you don't use Norton Anti-virus you don't need this on startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
System tray control panel for C-Media based soundcards - often included on popular motherboards with in-built audio. Available via Start > Control Panel. Not needed on startup.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VirtualDrive] "C:\Program Files\FarStone\VirtualDrivePro\VDTask.exe" /AutoRestore
virtual CD drive emulator. Available via Start > All Programs

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Tray icon for Quicktime. Available via Start > All programs.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe"
HP Software updates. Can be run manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe"
Checks the internet for updated drivers/utilities for your HP product - update manually. Disabling will remove the error "Windows can't shutdown the computer because hpcmpmgr.exe can't be ended"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Norton SystemWorks] "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\cfgwiz.exe" /GUID {05858CFD-5CC4-4ceb-AAAF-CF00BF39736A} /MODE CfgWiz
Norton SDystem Works configuration wizard. Reportedly a resource hog. Many users find they can live without loading it.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE" /background
Tray icon for Windows Messenger. Can be run by going to Start > All Programs > Online Services.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Shareaza] "C:\Program Files\Shareaza\Shareaza.exe" -tray
Can be run by going to Start > All Programs. Not needed on startup.

Close HiJackThis. Reboot, post a new HiJackThis log, and let me know if it's running faster ;)
