Okay, I'm having a mini panic attack.  I moved some files into the Recycle Bin as I thought I had a backup of them in the F (terabyte) drive.  The Recycle Bin said some of the names of the files were too long - really odd thing to say - and would I just like to move them all at once to the Recycle Bin?  Next thing I know my C drive is only 1/4 full!!!!!  I tried to drag the files back out of the Recycle Bin, but they're not even showing.  The whole folder I put in the Recycle Bin has just disappeared!!!!  Other items that were duplicates were in the Recycle Bin, but this huge folder is just GONE.  I have no idea how to recover it without restoring my computer.  Plus, I don't believe restoring it will restore the data.  That's what it tells me when it says it can restore items - that no data files will be altered.  I can't believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I DIDN'T EVEN EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN.  So I have no idea why the files did not show when I went to open it up again!!!!!!!!

Computer shut off whilst trying to fix and recover my deleted files.  Had to power it up 5 times and then it stayed on.  I was researching online to try to recover my files and I'm no closer to recovering them than when I started.

When you get a chance,

Download WhoCrashed
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
  • Put a tick in Accept then click on Next.
  • Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next.
  • Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon.
  • then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish.
  • Click Analyze
  • It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes
WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it.
Copy and paste it into your next reply.

We've run this program before.  The program did not ask to install debugger. The conclusions are the same as before.

I still need help with my files that were deleted.  Should I ask for help in a different area of Geekstogo?  I lost about 3/4 of my files when I accidentally moved a folder to the Recycle Bin I thought was backed up.  I thought I had a copy of it in the F (terabyte) drive and it turns out that  that folder was the only copy.  I was afraid this might happen.  So much for backing up files.

Files are gone, you could try a system restore in a last ditch effort.

Might try this another shot in the dark do it first https://www.piriform.com/recuva

Just noticed something I think is noteworthy.  Yesterday, while on Facebook, I was sent two fake/scam messages by "friends".  I play a game on FB and I don't actually know any of these people in person.  I decided to compare the photo in my game's friends list to my FB friend's photo and I noticed that the photo was different.  Two of these friends were apparently hacked and their accounts were sending out a hoax telling people they had been blocked from FB unless they sent their login info to FB.  I knew it was a scam because of all the grammatical errors, so I did not click the link.  Plus, why would another friend send me this kind of warning "from" Facebook?  I did however visit the person's FB page who sent me the scam.  When I looked at the picture to see if it was the same person, there was the FB "F" icon with a lock over it and the person's name had been changed to "Privàƈy Onlinẻ".  I thought this was strange.

Then, while I was looking back in my history on Chrome for a page I visited several days ago, I just happened to go back to 7-06-14.  On this day, it shows that I visited both www.facebook.com and "Privàƈy Onlinẻ".  This makes me very concerned.  I have NOT visited this "Privàƈy Onlinẻ" until just yesterday 7-20-14.  I'm wondering if my account could be hacked and next thing I know it will start sending out fake crap "from" me.  What I'm more concerned about is that this could be one of the problems/viruses I've been experiencing and that I can't get rid of!  Any thoughts about this, Joe?

I think the problem or issue is entirely related to facebook and not some un-found Malware on your machine. I base that from your log reports..

My main concern about the desktop is the intermittent shut down issue. You should consider taking it in for repair. That problem is not going to go away. That problem is also best addressed by replacing suspected bad parts such as power supply etc.

I can certainly try replacing the power supply as I did this several years ago with my computer that was dying then.  Except it shut down a few times over a week's worth of time and then I never could get it to boot after that.  A friend of mine said if it wasn't the power supply, then it was the mother board.  That's when I bought this computer.  I removed the hard drives and had this fellow install them in my current computer.

This problem I have now has been going on for more than 7 months, so I wonder if it could be the power supply?

Taking my computer in for repair would probably not be worth the cost to repair it.  It's 6 years old.  I need a laptop for work, so as soon as I get enough saved, I will probably buy a Chromebook.  It is what I can afford in the foreseeable future.  I'd rather get a desktop AND a laptop, but I'll still have to wait.

You know I got really lucky I was looking for a laptop as a back-up computer in case my old desktop that I'm using now dies, I found one on craigs list for 200.00 Hardly used it's a good size Gateway Win 7 64Bit.

The power supply would be the first place to start, I'd consider replacing it and see what happens, the other issue could be overheating but I think you know that already...

Did you try recuva link yet in my post 83, it might get some files back not sure though. The quicker you try it better chance of recovering something at least.

Okay, this is weirder.  I changed my FB password and went back to 7-06-14 in my history.  The Privàƈy Onlinẻ visit disappeared.  Also, several days which showed only a few websites visited, suddenly now have several websites, that I knew I'd visited.  I don't know how this program could affect so much of my browser, but it's the only explanation I can think of!

Thanks for the recommendation for my file recovery.   :yeah: I'd done some research and the program I'd downloaded was so user-unfriendly that I was falling asleep trying to understand what to do.  It was pretty late at night, but man that was hard stuff!  I'm running the Recuva scan right now and it says it will take anywhere from 18 hours to 2 days!!  Gotta love those little programs :geek: !  I'm really hoping this scan can recover my files.  I've never done anything like this before.  I think the Recycle Bin asked if I wanted to just delete the items because it only has a limited capacity for files.  If I'd known that, I would not have said "OK".  Plus, it was late at night.  I've gotta stop trying to fix things late at night when I'm tired!! :smashcomp:
