Lenovo Computer came with Windows 8 and constantly asked if I wanted to upgrade to Windows 8.1.  Based on help from Geeks to Go, I always declined this upgrade.  Today I got a pop-up saying there were upgrades that I needed to make to Windows 8.1.  I never authorized upgrade to Windows 8.1.  How do I tell if I am running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and if I'm running Windows 8.1 how do I go back to Windows 8?  Thanks!

Control Panel, System will tell you.

You don't want to go back to Windows 8.0, stay with 8.1 and apply Update 1 and all other updates.

You will have to do this at some point to continue to receive updates so since you are already there, it would be pointless to go back. Are you having any problems?

Got it!  I am still using Windows 8.  Think Microsoft or someone was trying to trick me into upgrading to Windows 8.1.  Have all the bugs been worked out of Windows 8.1 and should I upgrade to 8.1?

All the bugs are never worked out of any computer code. There are always things that can go wrong.

Having said that, the update to 8.1 usually goes well. If you are leery of doing it, make an image backup to an external hard drive before the update. Then if anything does go wrong you can restore the image and be right back where you are in 20 minutes or so.

I suggest using Macrium Reflect Free to do the backup with.

You should be backing up anyway, even if you don't fo the update.
