Looks good so far as you can access your Data.   Providing you only coppied the folder onto the USB stick, it will still be present on the HDD, so you can copy it again.

The Free Agent will be OK to use when you have cleared some space.

For you next attempt I would not plug in the second USB stick, rather, Boot into Slacko , > connect the Free Agent, > Open the Mount window, > click Refresh and then look for the external drive, > Mount it.

Then > Mount the windows OS.

If you have saved music files, seems a bit strange that only Sample one where present in the My Music folder contained in My Docs Folder.   Make sure it is Your Data you are looking at.

You can also Open the My Docs folder and inspect each folder individually and perhaps only copy the folders you want to the Free Agent. .

You are very welcome

I copied the files onto a separate drive successfully and am working on getting the windows OS copied as well but am unsure of which folder to copy. I assume you mean C:\Windows, is that correct?   Any insight is appreciated.

Sorry delayed again.

I copied the files onto a separate drive successfully and am working on getting the windows OS copied as well but am unsure of which folder to copy. I assume you mean C:\Windows, is that correct?   Any insight is appreciated.

NO for copying the windows OS, it is not installable from that configuration, it is also possible as well to copy across the infected files.

I should have said, "Mount SDa1 ( that is the HDD containing the Windows installation)   So there are no confusions, please follow the instructions below.

*****************************

Boot to the Slacko Desktop.

Look bottom left of screen that shows icons, HDD, USB, possible FDD.   There should be sda1 by the HDD icon.

****************************

> Plug in the Free Agent..

> go too the top menu, > l/c the Mount icon.

> In the window that opens, at bottom left, > l/c Refresh.

> in the mount window, > for the sda1, > l/c the (un) Mount.  The windows C drive will be displayed showing folders..

> In the Mount window, > l/c the (un) Mount for the SD# for the second USB (the Free Agent).   A window for the Free Agent  will open.

> X close the Mound window.

***********************

NB. Take care not to delete anything when working inside the C drive, as it will be deleted from the OS drive.

Left clicking on a folder will open it, to go back, (up one) l/c the blue up arrow (top left corner of the window)

*************************

> In the C window, > l/c on the Documents and Settings folder.

> In the window that opens, > l/c on Your User Folder. (possible have your name)

*******************

New Info.   copy any or all of the following folders, You can look inside them and if no info you want, don't bother copying.  do not copy Driver Folder

My Albums.

My Digital Editions.

My Music.

My Pictures.

My Scans.

My Videos.

> l.c on the the folder you want and hold down.

> > Drag the folder onto a clear space in the Free Agent window and release.

r/c on the folder in the Free Agent  window, > in the fly out menu, l/c Copy,  A window showing files being copied will open, wait before going to the next folder.

*******************

When finshed

> Click the Mount icon from the top menu.

> l/c once on the (un) mount for the HDD and and then the Free Agent.  Both windows will close.

> l/c Menu, (bottom left corner of the screen) > l/c Shutdown.

> in the window that open, > l/c Shutdown. (or might be turn off)

> In the window that open to "save settings" > l/c NO.

After shutdown, remove the Slacko USB sticks and the Free Agent, test your backup.

If not clear or you have questions, please post.

OK, so I saved the files I wanted to an external drive and checked the files on another computer.  All of my docs are there, thanks.  Just want to make sure that I am looking at the files on the external drive on another computer, not the infected one, correct?

Correct

What next?   Looking at some manuals for the notebook, I can't see access to a factory recovery option???   If it not present, do you want to try cleaning out the Trojan, (means going back to the Malware Forum as they are the only members allowed to use the tools) or doing a fresh install of the OS?

Do you have the OS installation CD and the driver disc?

Unfortunately I do not have the OS installation disck.  i used to have an xp boot disk but can't locate that at this point.  not sure it would work since the optical drive doesn't apear to be working.  I recall reading something about a program that is bootable from the usb drive that helps combat this malware.  Istill have the thread open in malware so I will post back there and see what they say.  Thanks, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

If you can borrow a disc to install and use your COA, that will work.   Look for a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, inside the battery cover or underneath the battery.
