I am having audio problems on my laptop. I run WIndows 7 64 bit and the audio will sometimes become full of static and slowed down. I have no idea what is causing it. I ran a virus scan with AVG and found no threats. I also ran a scan with Malwarebytes and found nothing. Could this be a driver error or could it be my soundcard starting to die?

If by static you mean crackling noises there can be many causes, both hardware and software.

Is the noise on the speakers only or can it be heard in headphones as well?

Lets start with the simplest first.

If it has a headphone port, or an external speaker port or both, try pushing a connector in and out a few times in them, that will make and break the ports internal isolation contacts and hopefully make them good again, especially if either not used at all or if used very regularly, the contacts can get a layer of oxide on them which can cause the crackling noises.

Next is to go to this site and download the sound driver first, then go to device manager, find the sound driver and uninstall it, then double click the downloaded sound driver file to install a fresh version.

If the crackling still persists after that, it may be down to a process running in the background and causing clicks and crackling sounds which needs to be found and identified. If a not important process it may be stopped to see if that clears the problem.

Let us know and if any questions please ask.

Nev.

The odd thing is most of the time it works normally. I also sometimes get "An error has occurred" when trying to watch YouTube. Could this somehow be related?
