Alikhat68,
Your welcome for the response. Wizard, you mean Windows upgrade assistant ? http://windows.micro...sta-xp-tutorial
What you could have used to check system is Upgrade Assistant first, before even trying a install .It says can not upgrade from Windows 8 from Windows XP, you need to buy a full version disc and do a clean custom install of Windows 8.1. When was completed make sure to download all available windows updates.
Looking at the PC specs it should be able to run Windows 8.1 fine.

What may concern me is lack of updated device drivers on Gateway's site, none for Windows 8.1. Not sure if originally this system was 64bit or 32bit Windows XP.
What installation disc are you saying was incompatible ? 2GB what shows with this PC to have is fine for Windows 8.1, although the speed is not so fast on RAM.RAM based on how many tasks going run at same time for performance. Could be something missing on system or incompatible too.
I am not sure how you first proceeded to do this installation. You definitely have enough disc space, not an issue, just over 300GB.
Hard to say right now till we do more and i find out more from you. Many reasons could be happening, may need to update device drivers on system too (hardware) . Any driver disc come with PC when bought, take a look at gateway site use your model number or service tag, as may need to re-download drivers for your system, although again what i saw they seemed dated back to 2010, still might be fine.
Can not install new OS without reinstalling some of your device drivers after. Video card drivers, IDE controllers, Chipset drivers, etc....
Try here for Video card http://www.geforce.com/drivers GeForce 7600GS you have. Backup copies for any drivers able to get for now.
