I can receive but not send emails on my iPad. I keep getting an "incorrect username or password" message.

On another website (an Apple one?) I found details of what the settings should be (see attached file) but I cannot get to this screen on my iPad, partly because the keyboard gets in the way even if I scroll down, but mainly because when I tap Advanced nothing happens. So I don't know if my settings are right.

I don't know if the settings are what's causing my inability to send emails anyhow - doesn't seem much to do with the username or password - but it would be nice to be able to check.

About three months ago I had an email problem with the iPad. I can't remember whether it was sending or receiving emails or both.

I spoke to BT helpline people and all kinds of things were tried and in the end the only way I could mend the email function was by taking the iPad back to factory settings and starting again. It's quite time-consuming and nerve-wracking, so I don't want to do it unless I can't avoid it.

Please can anyone help?

Hello sue.words,

I'm not exactly an expert on iOS, but I see nobody has responded yet.  A few questions:

1)  Are you able to send mail through the web-based email (not Mail application)?

2)  What model is your iPad and what iOS version are you on?

3)  Have you tried deleting the e-mail account (in Mail app settings) and adding it back?

From what I've gathered reading your post, it sounds like you may have changed your password in one location, but not under the SMTP [advanced] settings.  I'm not sure why Advanced Settings won't open for you.

Tip:  Depending on you iOS version, you may be able to "split" your keyboard to make the button more visible.  (Put both thumbs in middle of the keyboard and drag outwards, toward the edge(s) of the screen.  Do the opposite to drag the keyboard back to "normal".

Good luck, and keep us updated.

Thank you very much, Fusionbomb, for responding. I really do appreciate it.

I had tried deleting the account but that didn't work - though I think I have sometimes had success with that procedure when things go silly.

I am ok now now, actually, because a friend visited a few days after I posted to this forum. He got rid of the split keyboard in Settings somehow (though I'm still baffled as to how it ever happened). He also discovered that I had a wrong password in Settings in the Outgoing section. (This was several days ago and a lot has happened since then - nothing to do with computers - so it's not fresh in my mind.) I am still a bit puzzled because I thought I had exhausted all reasonable possibilities but obviously I was wrong about that!

The main thing is that the problem is now solved. But thanks once more for your willingness to help.
