In Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), then type: explorer and hit Enter

OK. The info from regedit:
Under the data row usernit says "x:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,", shell says "cmd.exe /k start cmd.exe".
is from the special truncated version of windows so we aren't looking at the real registry.
What happens when you try to start explorer from task manager. Do you get an error?

From the black screen task manager File, New Task (Run), try:
c:\windows\explorer.exe
Do you get the same error?

We want to go in and look at the winlogon entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
an see what shell and userinit are set to.

Could you take a look at this forum thread I think it explains how to possibly fix the issue.
