Windows 10 (upgraded from win 7), Printer: Brother HL-2240 laser.

Microsoft took over my computer and upgraded my Win 7 to win 10.

Everything seemed to work after upgrade, and printer printed as always.

Then windows did an auto update (in the early morning) and everything worked fine,

including my printer.

Now when I try to print anything, everything appears normal - I click print, my print

options display, I hit enter, the screen displays "printing" .... then nothing. No message,

no beeps. printer LED just shows the "ready" light. After about 45 seconds, my computer

shows a pop up just above my sys tray - computer out of paper.

I have removed my paper tray (still had plenty of paper) and added more paper, and

put back in the computer. I Tried to reprint several times, but got the same result.

Went to my settings icon, selected Devices > printers>brother HL-2240>Devices and

Printers>Brother HL-2240 series>see what's printing - and the display panel displays

"out of paper.... printing" under the status tab. No warning lights are lit up on my printer.

Do I have a driver problem, or could it just be a printer problem?

Have you tried uninstalling the printer software, removing the printer from devices and then reinstalling the printer?

Hello builder4580,

Is the printer selected as the default printer in Settings > Devices > printers & scanners, if yes;

Create a new restore point.

Uninstall the present printer software.

Disconnect the printers USB cable.

Create a new folder on your desktop called HL-2240

Download the Windows 10 drivers for the printer from here and copy them to your newly created HL-2240 folder.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode only (no networking)

Install the drivers etc for the printer - only attach the printers USB cable when you get an on screen message prompting you to do so.

Restart the computer as normal, test and then post back with an update for us please.

WOW! Spent the day trying to learn how to use windows 10 - Thank god for Google!

Followed your instructions through "restart in safe mode". F8 doesn't work for win 10?

Finally found a link to start in safe mode - don't ask me where!

Now I'm lost at "install printer drivers etc for printer". What does etc mean? Do i install

each .dll file and all the other files listed? Or do I copy/paste my folder HR-2240 contents

somewhere? Or the "install win_8" folder, or the contents - sorry I'm lost at this point.

My printer cable is still unattached at this point. Thank God my Win 10 back up computer

does not have a problem printing at this point, maybe because it is not used as much.

So, in summary, I am stuck at "install the drivers etc for the printer...".

If you double click on the folder do the files not start to be automatically extracted, if not, also in Safe Mode, go to downloads by clicking on the Windows Start Tile > File Explorer > Downloads and then single click on the HL-2240 inst D1 icon and the files should start to be extracted, follow the on screen prompts from there please.

Been a busy couple of days! I picked up a browser hijacker malware/virus from somewhere that froze my browser, so couldn't do anything till I got that resolved.

Finally, followed your instructions above in safe mode and finished with a popup - Brother Printing device software has already been installed. There are no additional items to install.

No instructions to plug in my printer cable appeared, so I plugged it in anyway and tried to print a notepad++ file. No reaction at all.

Rebooted into normal mode and tried printing again. Success! Also printed the Open Office file where to problem first came to light. So everything seems to be back to normal.

Thank you phillpower2 for you help. I guess this issued is solved, unless you need any more info for your personal use. Thank you again.

No worries, been busy myself  :)

Just out of curiosity, can you let us know what version of drivers are now installed, Windows 8 or 10 etc,  reason I ask is because I`m not sure how any drivers could already be installed if you had uninstalled the previous drivers, rather odd  :headscratch:

I plugged it in anyway and tried to print a notepad++ file. No reaction at all.

That is normal behaviour after installing drivers in safe mode and the reason why restarting in normal mode was suggested.

You are welcome btw and pleased to hear that the printer is now working ok for you  :)

I'm in a panel with heading - print server properties and am in the drivers tab.

It shows:

Name:            Brother HL-2240 Series

Processor:      x64

Type:             Type 3 - user mode

If I open my desktop HL-2240 folder, I have the following folders:

install_win8

rempnp

wlan_wiz_win8

and the applications:

dlinf_10250

HL-2240_inst_D1_win8_useu

So it appears I have win8 drivers, which I read somewhere, works with win10.

I upgraded directly from win7 to win10 - or rather Microsoft muscled me into it

without my consent.

Not sure about the removal process - I hit the remove button, but got no indication

as to whether anything had happened, so maybe they were not removed.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the additional info which confirmed what I thought may have happened, as long as the printer works ok I suspect you don`t mind what drivers you have though  :)
