Yes, you normally need the entire PC ... so that the during the installation routine, the Operating System can install and setup the appropriate drivers etc. for that particular PC.

Of-course Richard, while window installation process works according to their hardware compatibility.
it is possible in only one case If shopkeeper have the same system hardware then put your hdd into it and install OS and you bring back and plugged into your pc. That will be work.
