The old desktop we have has 6G of memory in it but the properties list only 3.24 usable. I did go into msconfig and there is no max set in boot, advanced. Is there a way to see if it is just because the pc is old (motherboard etc) or is this fixable. Win 7 Pro is installed.

The key point is the type of operating system being used
64 bit Win 7 should have no difficulty with larger amounts of RAM ( providing the motherboard supports it)
however
32 bit versions just cannot address much over 3.5Gb or so...
So the first check is to look at the system properties and determine if a 64 or 32bit operating system is installed.
Second check is to see what the maximum RAM is that can be supported by the Motherboard (this information should be in the owners manual) or you can fire up your favourite search engine to get the figure

It is a 64bit WIN 7 and Bios does see 6G. Supposedly Dell states 8G is the limit. However also read that the BIOS may need upgrading so will put that off until I have a local geek look at it.
