If you got Avast working then open Avast and Protection, AntiVirus, Scan History. Did it find anything? You can click on the last scan and Detailed Report. (No report if it says it didn't find anything)
If after installing Avast, Chrome stopped working you can uninstall Avast and see if that helps.
