I'm not sure I did this correctly. This is what I see after entering the first copied text:

BTW - I have had some problems the last few week manually updating the MSE. When I click on the "Update Definitions" after opening MSE from the desktop icon, it says "Searching" which goes fairly quickly. When it gets to Downloading, that can last a few minutes. Installing takes a very long time and sometimes the downloading process starts over again. Sometimes it can install, other times it's can't. What works, so far, is going to

https://support.micr...for-microsoft-s

and getting them there.

My fault.  Should have been REG not REQ

reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" /s > \junk.txt

Download the attached loadapps.zip file.

Right click on it and Extract All, Extract.  Right click on loadapps.reg and select Merge.

This will change

 LoadAppInit_DLLs    REG_DWORD    0x1

to  LoadAppInit_DLLs    REG_DWORD    0x0

and will fix the error:

Log: 'System' Date/Time: 11/09/2017 4:27:07 PM

Type: Warning Category: 0
Event: 11 Source: Microsoft-Windows-Wininit
Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. The system administrator should review the list of libraries to ensure they are related to trusted applications.

This is just leftover from a poor uninstall.

Since Windows Defender isn't working that well try the free Avast

Click on Download then choose the free version.  (Uncheck any optional software and do not take the free demo stick with the Basic version)

Once you get it installed and updated.set it up to run a boot-time scan tonight while you sleep.

It takes like 6 hours so I usually let it run at night.

Click on the Avast ball.  Then click on Protection, then on Antivirus, then on Other Scans then on Boot-time Scan.  Click on Install Special Definitions.  Click on Run on Next PC Reboot.

Reboot and let it run a scan.  It may take hours.
Once it finishes it should load windows.   Mute your speakers so it doesn't wake you up when Windows boots.

When you reboot you will see the scan start.  It will tell you where it saves its log.  Usually it's C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\aswBoot.txt but it might change so verify the location.   This is a hidden location so you will need to tell Windows to let you see it:

Copy and paste the text from the log to a Reply when done.

Is there an unzipped version of loadapps available? I noticed after yesterday's monthly patch install, the HD light is always on and Task Manager indicates that the SearchFilterHost, Search Indexer and SearchProtocolHost are active. Is this related to the error you mentioned?

The error is not that important.  Copy the lines between the *s but do not include the *s.

*****************************

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"LoadAppInit_DLLs"=dword:00000000
*******************************

Open Notepad

Ctrl + v (or Edit then paste)

File, Save As. "loadapps.reg"  OK.  (Make sure you use the quotes)

Close Notepad and right click on loadapps.reg and Merge

Let's see a Process Explorer log:

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

It seems to be working better lately, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. If it starts acting up again, I will resume this thread. Thanks for all the help.
