After bootup, and before loading any programs, Task Manager shows 50 -60 % CPU and 95+% memory.  Loading a program or two, results in 98 or 99% memory and then a freeze.  Re-booting in Safe MOde results in 0-5% CPU and 15-20% memory.

I'm currently in Safe Mode.

I use Kaspersky and Malwarebytes Premium.  I use Firefox and Thunderbird.  Machine has an AMD processor (3.11GHz) with 8 gigs RAM.

Everything worked wonderfully until this morning.

Please start with the following steps

Step 1:
Speccy
http://filehippo.com/download_speccy

1. File > Save Snapshot. This will create a file called [hostname].speccy
2. File > Publish Snapshot. This saves your snapshot to their servers
3 Copy and Paste the link to your next Reply

Step 2:
Click on Start menu
Type in cmd
Right click on cmd in list and select run as administrator
Copy and Paste the commands into the command console
1. sfc /scannow
2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

When these have completed.
Right click on the top bar command window
Left click on Edit then Select All
Right click on the top bar again
Left click on edit then copy
paste into your reply

Step 3:
Download Process Explorer
https://docs.microso...rocess-explorer

1. Save it to your desktop then run it. Right Click and Select Run As Administrator
2. Select View Menu Click Select Columns
3. In the Select Columns Window Check Verified Signer and Click OK
4. Select Options Menu and Check Verify Image Signatures
5. Double Click o the CPU Column to sort by highest CPU usage.
(System Idle Process should be at the top once sorted properly)
6. Wait approximately a minute
7. Select Save or Save As from the File Menu and save System Idle Process.txt to Desktop
8. Upload the file to your Reply

dmccoy,

No, nothing new this morning.  I will try to follow your instruction.  I assume I can do all this while in safe mode?

I started Stop 2.

I don't understand what you meant by:  Copy and Paste the commands into the command module.  I'm not sure what you meant by "command module."

Regardless, what came up was an DOS type white letters on black screen.  I typed in sfc/scannow at the prompt:c:\windows\system32  It is now scanning and the verification is 45% complete.

When this "scan" is complete, how do I get back to the appropriate prompt to type in dism/online/cleanup-image/restorehealth?  Will the windows\system32 prompt come back automatically?

Ok, the verification scan ended with the report:  "Windows protection did not find any integrity violations"

The windows/system32 prompt came back - will now run the dism...... command

Okay are you in safe mode with internet? You have to be online for it to work. Are you not able to boot into regular mode. We need to run the other steps from there to see what might be going on? One issue is you are running two Anti-Virus programs at once. Please disable or remove Kapersky while troubleshooting.

If I may chime in with an observation and some info folks  :)

You should never have more than one AV installed as the two will conflict, cause instability and potentially leave you with no AV protection at all, MBAM has also had problems with a bad update release within the past 24 hrs, see info here

Antivirus
Malwarebytes
Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date
Kaspersky Internet Security

I tried to boot in regular windows mode, but it ran at 99% of memory so, effectively, it froze the computer.  I rebooted into safe mode and taking phillpower2's advice, I uninstalled malewarebytes and, indeed that was the issue.

I'm now in regular mode and I'm running at 0-9% CPU and around 25% memory while running firefox and the task manager.

No problem. Dont worry about the dism command right now. It probably isnt getting typed correctly. That is why I recommend the copy and paste method. We can come back to it later if needed. Please move to next steps. I will be offline until tom and will touchbase then.
