I was talking to a friend that called me when suddenly the line went dead. We were both using cable-service landline phones. I tried to call her back, but there were no ring tones. She then called me from her cell phone. We tried to work out what the problem was - she said that she could hear me when my line went dead, but I could not hear her. She also said that she could call her landline from her cell, so I then tried to call her landline again. It rang twice, then stopped. I tried her cell phone and got through. So apparently she can call me from her landline and cell, and I can call her cell, but not her landline. Where is the problem most likely to be?

I'd contact your cable-service landline provider's tech support to see if they explain and fix the problem..
