Thank you for replying again, sorry for the delay, i'm back at work now & not as much time is freely available now.

Graphics card was removed, we hoped the problem would be power supply

I have a 300w power supply hooked up (removed from an old Dell PC i have) with the 24 to 8 pin adapter cable now. When i restarted it after fitting the 'new' PSU i left the room for about 30 mins, came back & the PC screen was frozen up

Just to refresh the problem occured (maybe coincidentally) when Dell sent an automatic BIOS update, if i remember correctly the PC wouldn't even switch on so i replaced the motherboard, no MB's were available from Dell so i used one from China (but Dell is stamped on it)

Just a question to rule something else out, I didn't use thermal paste when refitting the processor, would this be the cause?

Oh dear  :(

If you left the computer unattended for thirty minutes you were most fortunate that you did not return to a blank screen accompanied by the acrid smell of the CPU having fried.

If for whatever reason the heatsink is even disturbed let alone removed the old thermal compound has to be properly cleaned off using near pure alcohol rubbing alcohol and then a fresh amount of a good quality brand thermal compound such as Arctic Silver 5 correctly applied.

Thermal compound products, cleaning and reapplication guides here

Oh dear is right! I even asked a guy in IT where i work & he said it's be ok not to! DOH

So i take it this is the probable cause? No idea why i mentioned it now, i was just thinking of what heats up in the PC & it came to mind.

I'll clean, then reapply fresh paste & report back........... i ordered the stuff you recommended, thank you

How much building and/or repairing computers does the guy in work do, anyone that works with computer hardware would be expected to know what needs to be done if a heatsink has been disturbed.

Thermal compound when correctly applied will normally last the lifetime of the computer but if as said the heatsink is disturbed the old compound must be properly cleaned off and a fresh amount correctly applied, why this is, thermal compound has a curing process which starts as soon as the computer is turned on for the first time, if the heatsink is disturbed after this the hardened compound does not work properly as pockets of air interfere with the heat transfer + uneven pressure can be applied to the top of the CPU which can cause no end of trouble.

Well do i not feel embarassed?! I apologise refusely if this has been the problem all along & i didn't know. I certainly wouldn't have had a 6 page thread wasting your time if i did & wait 2 months on a lead from Hong Kong that i may not need now.

As for the IT guy's PC building skills will i don't know. buy seems like they're very low!, obviously he's better suited to software problems.

I'll get the old paste off & the new stuff on this weekend & see if that works

First and foremost, no ones time has been wasted and secondly there is no need for any apology, this is new territory for you and credit where credit is due and you did ask someone that you thought would know if thermal paste needed to be reapplied, none of us were born knowing this stuff and have learned about it along the way.

If you are to be successful in resolving this you will need to use the PSU adaptor to be able to do so.

A lint free cloth or coffee machine filter papers are good to use with the rubbing alcohol to get the old compound off, no scraping or sharp edges to be involved though.

Catch up with you over the weekend but any questions meanwhile give us a shout.

Thanks Phil but you spend enopugh time on here without trivial problems that should not have been overlooked by me

I cleaned off the thermal paste last night with some acetone nail polish remover & lint free cloth, it worked well. The new thermal paste, Arctic Silver 5, was applied as per their youtube directions - they recommend 1 large blob in the middle.

I refitted the Graphics card & the old pwer supply but the PC froze again, looking at your instructions above should i be trying the other 300W PSU i removed from the other PC again?, i'll try that & update this post.

Thank you again for your help

No worries and thanks for the update

Before trying the other PSU I would be testing with the GPU removed and swapping the RAM around the slots first, saves any repetition later.

Ok, Ill do that. I only have 1 stick of RAM so I think I need to leave it where it is

It will do no harm to try the RAM in any other slot/s, it will not cause any damage by doing so.

Ok, RAM swapped over, GPU removed, see how that goes

One thing i noticed, when powering up the power button is solid orange for about 1 second just before it turns white & powers up

Can`t say for sure tbh but the one second of orange power button could just be the time it takes for the power on self test to complete.

Ok, another freeze :(

Noticed the orange light only happens when i disconnect power, press a small black button on the PSU to drain existing power, reconnect the lead, then hit the power up button - if i just shut down & power up with the button it stays white

What was the computer being used for when it froze this time.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;
