Still have the minor problem with with IE. I want to be able to search from the address bar, and have IE take me to the most likely site (which I have set in Internet Options>>Advanced>>Search. Previously, if i had typed blue in the address bar, then hit Ctrl + Enter, www.blue.com would load. Instead, I get taken to search results from google (formerly MSN, after some advice I got from here).

OK but nothing else seems viral in nature, correct?

When you get to the "Advanced Options" and look "Search from Address Bar" and then under "When Searching"

Which of the 4 Options is selected?

Let me start over with some basics and lets double check that all the settings are correct!

I looked at quite a few sites about this and just want to be sure you have either tried these or atleast looked at them!

First thing is,what search engine do you want to use?

Google is the easiest to follow but the choice is yours!

Look at these 2 links and tell me what ya think?

ok, here's what I want to do. IE has a shortcut built in where if i type a domain name, then Ctrl+Enter, IE will automagically add the http://www in the beginning and the dotcom at the end of the domain name.

I should be able to type google, hit Ctrl+Enter, and have www.google.com load in my browser window. instead, I am taken to this url - http://www.google.com/search?q=google. I don't want to search from the address bar, and if I choose that option in my internet options>Advanced>search options, I get this url, http://google/ which obviously doesn't work.

***I found something that might be helpful. I went to View>Explorer Bar>Search, and google is there by default. I have the option to customize the search with something called Search Assistant. I can choose from a number of search engines and a variety of search types (web sites, mailing address, email address, images, etc., etc.)

Could this be the culpret? I checked out google and found this post:

"Hey there... since a couple weeks ago i had the anoying
search asistant toolbar instaled on my pc... how did it
got there? i have no idea... but i wanted to get rid off
it.

after using all spyware removal software availabe
online... it came out to be there, over and over...

i found this information you might want to try if you
want to get rif off it..

Go to Control Panel
Add / Remove Programs

remove the following...

Internet Explorer Searchbar
Windows Search Functions
Windows SA

-or- (older versions)

IE Search bar
Windows SA

that would get rid of the toolbar...! "

Unfortunately, I none of that software is installed (at least, its not installed where I can remove it using the control pannel).

OK,I think I understand what you want and thats whay I asked you which of the 4 selections you had chose!

One selection under "When Searching" is "Go to the most likely site"

I believe thats what you after!

I would like to know what changed this from the setting you had previously used!

Try some of the ideas we talked about and I will keep asking around and searching!

yeah, I played around with each option and I still get the same results.

I found a GoogleToolbar.dll - can I safely remove this?

Google Toolbar can be safely removed from Add\Remove Programs and if you find leftovers from the toolbar, all those can be removed as well!

As I havent a clue on how to accomplish what you are trying to do,my advice is worthless at best!

I have tried several different ways but cant get IE to do what you are saying!

Was this some kinda Tweak?
