I have a Sony PCG-K33. According to all the paperwork it uses PC2100 DDR 266, but it came with PC2700 DDR 333 straigt out of the factory.

Out of the box RAM configuration 2*256MB PC2700 DDR333.
Current RAM configuration 1*512MB PC2100 DDR266 + 1*256MB PC2700 DDR333

I am trying to upgrade to 1GB RAM. I bought a 512MB PC2100 RAM. I took the old 256MB PC2700 and replaced it with the new 512MB PC2100. When I turned the Laptop on it took longer then usual, then when windows started i checked the amount of ram under MY COMPUTER>Properties and it said 192MB. I also checked with Burn It, and it was the same result 192 MB of RAM.

After that I tried the old 256MB PC2700 with the new 512MB PC2100 and started the computer one more time. Now It reads 224 MB.

If i go back to old 512MB PC2100 and 256MB PC2700 I get 768MB.

Any idea what can be causing this?

I have worked on a situation similar to this. You will find the answer in the BIOS and it can give you the right information in Windows and speed up your computer. I am not sure of the exact setting at it varies by BIOS, but you will need to look around and don't be afraid to try some settings out.

Thanks, I looked in the BIOS but I have no clue to change settings for RAM, or for speeds of any sort. Further guidence would be appreciated.
Ohh and by the way i just tried to put the 2*512 MB and now it says 709 insted 119, very wierd, that was even before i tried to mess with the BIOS.

I found the problem. Something I should have checked earlier. The RAM Chip of 512MB PC2100 DDR266 was bad. My system was only reading 256. I went to the store exchanged it and BAM now im running with 1GB RAM.
