Hello,

At the outset, let me say thank you for any help you folks give me. This is a wonderful service you are providing.

I have been battling with some local idjits who think it is great fun to plant trojans on folks' PCs and the geek dr bills have gotten to be more than I can bear. Thus I've come to the conclusion that I am simply going to have to learn how to be my own Ms Fix-it. Make that Grammy Fix-it. sigh...

In the past my solution has been to simply reload windows and start from scratch but I have lost count of how many times I have had to do that. So in the past few weeks I have been on a quest to learn as much as I can about this beast and how to protect it. Unfortunately I am living proof of the adage that a little information can make one dangerous... Please forgive my ignorance, this is like learning a whole new language on a different planet as far as I am concerned.

At anyrate, on to my questions... During my most recent reinstall experience (3 days ago) my Windows Security Log showed that during my windows service pack 2 update which stalled during installation for some unknown reason there was a guest logon. During this time I was playing around with the guest account trying to figure out if I could delete it and had turned it on and off for a few seconds at a time several times. Would that acccount for the logon notification?

(NEVER MIND on this next question. I've finally figured out the right questions to ask and googled my own answer. 127.0.0.1 is fine. Such an education I'm getting!) My next question. I have installed Netstat Viewer which shows me which ports on my PC are busy. Unfortunately it does not include any help files to help me decipher that information. When I google how to understand netstat I get lost in the geek speak rather quickly. Simple question: Is it normal for there to be two vastly different local addresses showing up as listening at various ports?

One I recognize as my ISP address. The other I don't have a clue although I can backtrace it and get a whois on it. As if that helps since at this point I don't understand that information all that much. But hey, there is a telephone number I can call.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 runnining WINXP. My internet connection is SBC broadband DSL. I have SYGATE, AVG, SpyBot, AdAware, and CleanUp plus Trojan Hunter and the 14 day trial of Ewido. I'm fairly bristling with armory.

I've run through your protocol and everything has come up clean except for a few cookies and minor adware thingies.

I've had a couple of problems with win32 failures and major problems with my internet browser cutting out on me unexpectedly (primarily during downloads) with error messages from Microsoft telling me it's a Yahoo problem and I should update to their newest browser which I have done already.

It also happens when I am using IE but not as often. MS also attributes that to Yahoo for some reason. That seems to have gotten better in the past 24 hours but then I'm not downloading as much stuff as I was so...

Hello again,

Well, things have quickly degenerated. Over the past few days my computer has become increasingly more sluggish and unresponsive. Sometimes I feel as if I was working with the first PC my son & his friends cobbled together from abandoned IBM parts donated to his PC Tech club when he was in college more than 15 years ago and my DSL feels like a 28 kbs connection. That's probably a gross exaggeration but I've come to expect much better than I'm getting, KWIM?

Very often when I want to close a program I have to go through task manager to accomplish that and I'm getting an inordinate amount of win32 svchost failure messages as well as having my internet browser die for no discernable reason. I can be across the room getting a cup of coffee and come back to find an error message.

In the last couple of days I've gotten several messages about some program/driver (? forgot to write that part down, sorry) through my firewall wanting to connect to the internet with this win32 doohickey: %systemroot%/system32 dumprep0 -u. I googled it and figured out it was OK but I haven't a clue WHY my poor PC felt the need to take this action.

Oh yes, apparently the poor dear isn't getting along very well with it's Dr either. Or maybe this fellow is just an exterminator with pretensions or delusions of grandeur. I've gotten several Dr Watson debugger failed and has to close. I got the feeling my PC actually slammed the door the last time that happened.

Saturday is when the real fun began. I had to load SYGATE manually and repair my LAN connection. Same thing Sunday and of course, again today was no different. However, today we had bonus problems to contend with. NONE of my desk top shortcuts worked.

So I tried a system restore to earlier in the day Sunday. Nope that didn't work and I had to go all the way back to Saturday. The only thing I did different was install my word processing program. It's an oldie--Corel Word Perfect 7 and I got it in '98. I love it and I don't want to part with it because it has the best thesaurus. I don't like the new Corel products.

Oh yeah, my son was here yesterday evening too and poked around in here. He downloaded some FREE progam that checked my registry for errors. It found quite a few but wouldn't tell us what they were unless we shelled out some cold cash. pffft... We uninstalled it and it tried to hijack my internet browser to go right back to it's install page but SYGATE stopped it. hmmmm.... Still the majority of these problems were happening before D did that!

ETA: At least "they" have not managed to hack in and steal my owner account right out from under my very nose and locked me out from accessing it yet. That was the main issue leading up to my last inreinstall. I still haven't figured out how they did that without me even being aware of anything happening.

PARANOID? Who me paranoid?

oopsie. I forgot to tell you that I went through the whole rigamarole you reccomend beforeposting the HJT scan again. Came up with zilch except for some minor cookies. I wish they were edible and chocolate chip. I need a chocale comfort food fix.

I've gotten several Dr Watson debugger failed and has to close. I got the feeling my PC actually slammed the door the last time that happened.

Saturday is when the real fun began. I had to load SYGATE manually and repair my LAN connection. Same thing Sunday and of course, again today was no different. However, today we had bonus problems to contend with. NONE of my desk top shortcuts worked.

So I tried a system restore to earlier in the day Sunday. Nope that didn't work and I had to go all the way back to Saturday. The only thing I did different was install my word processing program. It's an oldie--Corel Word Perfect 7 and I got it in '98. I love it and I don't want to part with it because it has the best thesaurus. I don't like the new Corel products.

Oh yeah, my son was here yesterday evening too and poked around in here. He downloaded some FREE progam that checked my registry for errors. It found quite a few but wouldn't tell us what they were unless we shelled out some cold cash. pffft... We uninstalled it and it tried to hijack my internet browser to go right back to it's install page but SYGATE stopped it. hmmmm.... Still the majority of these problems were happening before D did that!

ETA: At least "they" have not managed to hack in and steal my owner account right out from under my very nose and locked me out from accessing it yet. That was the main issue leading up to my last inreinstall. I still haven't figured out how they did that without me even being aware of anything happening.

oopsie. I forgot to tell you that I went through the whole rigamarole you reccomend beforeposting the HJT scan again. Came up with zilch except for some minor cookies. I wish they were edible and chocolate chip. I need a chocale comfort food fix.

While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep a victim from making the changes necessary to clean their comptuer. Please read the following and uninstall or disable those that apply to your machine.

Hi there,

Well things got rather woolly here and have changed dramatically. On the 18th I did a Panda scan and they detected something that started with a Q. It was a minor keylogger trojan that was mainly affecting computers in India and SE Asia. The alert come out on the 17th. How I got it is a mystery... Anyhoo I had Panda disinfct and then all [bleep] broke loose.

Trojan Hunter said there were changes to the registry. I could tell it involve drivers and the Win32 system and it probably wasn't good but I didn't know what to do with that information so I just shut down on my way to bed. Got a blue screen. oooo not good.

It wasn't good. The next morning I had nothing. Just kept rebooting itself over and over.

So I followed the advice I read somewhere in your pages about letting it sit at least half an hour unplugged to discharge the memory and re-installed windows on the 20th. Unfortuantely, I couldn't find anyone with a CD RW who could download a copy of a SYGATE firewall for me but that was the first thing I installed after I got going again.

I'd like you to check a new set of HJT logs and see if I got rid of them. Plus I have some questions about some stuff.

Hi Wife,

No, I am not on a home network or at least I'm not supposed to be. I only own this computer. As outlandish as it sounds, in the past, I have had problems with someone in my apt. building I live in (I assume) "enrolling" me in their LAN.

I've run through the whle rigamarole with all the steps before posting a HJT log and was shocked at what Clean-up found. Over 3,000 files. It also froze up my machine. I got an error message about needing the Windows Service Pack 2 CD and I had to do a manual shut-down. I rebooted in safe mode & thankfully everything checked out ok.

When I went and checked, my download history at Microsoft is showing I did not get the service pack 2. My add/remove panel shows I did. I suppose on Monday I should take that up with tech support at MS.

I have my XP Firewall turned off.

The hits are coming from IP addy 192.168.0.1 (according to IANA this is a LAN address) to Local port 0 or 1900 and then there are various others that whois traces back to RIPE (European) addresses. Within a 2minute time-frame where I sat idle online I got 30 "trys" (w/multiple hits per each try) from the 192...#. This was not all in a row. Yahoo was pinging it's guts out which I have a feeling I should be grateful for.

I dunno, it's hard to tell if I'm jumping at shadows or not. I've learned a lot more about this kind of stuff than I ever wanted to know but mostly just enough to keep me spooked. I've almost gotten to the point where it's not fun to have a PC anymore. Might be better to just be rid of it.
