Ive grown accustomed to using HiJackThis and your forums to clean off my computer, but my friend's computer seems to be in horrible shape and I finally convinced him to let me try to clean it off. I have AdAware running right now, but when I run HJT and try to scan with it, it gets stuck about halfway through saying "redirect file direction" and then goes into non-responding status and dies. Some things show up that I know I need to get rid of, but how do I get rid of the error?

What version of HijackThis are you using?

I have older (and maybe newer) versions available for you to try.

I am using v.1.98.2. Any ideas? It says 01-HOST FILE REDIRECTION on the progress bar and then freezes.

Is it correct you are using XP?

In that case find this file:
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS
It does not have any extension. Give it one by renaming it to hosts.bak
Then run HijackTHis again.

If you are not using XP You may find the hosts fiule in these locations.
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

Pieter

Yea, it is XP, but when I went to find that extension, there was already a hosts.bak in there as well as just a hosts, so it wou;d not let me rename it.

Before we fix anything, could you please mail me (by clicking this link) a (preferably zipped) copy of
c:\WINDOWS\system32\winsrvs_1.dll

It didn't matter much to what you renamed hosts, as long as Windows doesn't use it anymore that's fine.

We will have to have a look later why this happened though.
In fact if the file you renamed hosts to isn't too big, could you attach that to the mail as well?

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

One that needs another nudge.

Check the following item in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [prrtect] C:\WINDOWS\System32\prrtect.exe

Then reboot.

I'll post back with what I find in your files.

The BHO you sent me was a known baddie:
winsrvs_1.zip/winsrvs_1.dll - infected by not-a-virus:AdWare.Ramdud

Read here for a more usefull hosts file then the one you had:
http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm

Nothing wrong with the one you had (KaZaa Lite ?), but the one above is better.
I'll send yours along to the maker of HijackThis, so he can figure out what went wrong.

Thanks for the files.

Regards,

Pieter
