I've run Ad-Aware 6 or 7 times and Spy-Bot S&D probably just as many. Everytime I run them, they seem to identify the problem (abetterinternet and Aurora) but can't get rid of it, and neither can I. I've (probably foolishly) gone through the directories and tried to delete some of it, but it just seems to pop back up again. I did all the necessary pre-lim stuff (and I have Norton Pro. Ed. 2004), and I did remember to re-boot my PC before doing the HJT scan, so here's my logfile:

I was just about ready to give up before I found this site, and I'm so glad that I have. I was almost considering wiping my hard-drive clear. I already have this on e-mail notification, so I'll be responding to any help in a timely manner.
Thank You in advance, Aerin.

Hi Aerin and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Would like you to take note of the following entry:

O23 - Service: Content Monitoring Tool (msCMTSrvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msCMTSrvc.exe (file missing)
An application that is bundled with certain Compaq computers that downloads and displays "Hot Deals" when new merchandise is available from Compaq.

If you would like to stop this, do this:

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Content Monitoring Tool (msCMTSrvc) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Hello, Excal. Thank you very, very much for helping me to get the Aurora and betterinternet malwares off my computer. Almost everything seems to be in good shape now, however, I have a slight concern about two dialers that the Activescan found on my system. All other threats that were found by it were manually deleted, however these two dialers seemed to be buried deep withing the registry, and I could not remove them. I've put them in red on the Activescan log.

Just a few random bad files and folders to clean up.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at or above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\ARCHIVIOSEX.NET]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\SGRUNT.BIZ]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\vidctrl
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\nsv

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\unstall.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WinNB57.dll

Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running :tazz:
