Hey Metallica,

I thought that was where you were going with that. Glad I could get a step ahead without messing anything up. :tazz:

It was a little nerve racking to attempt a safe boot even knowing it would work this time. Grandma-to-be has been calling almost on the hour, I told her to start looking for a new system-just in case. (and to get her out of my hair)

Alright, I have removed the requested items from HJT and run winpfind.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi Kat, :tazz:

geekygirl,

Can you surf to http://virusscan.jotti.org/

and have these two files scanned to check what I'm suspecting:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jesterss.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jsdvwsdk.dll

Copy the results into your next post please.

Finally got it hooked up to the internet. here are the results.

File: jesterss.dll
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)

The files have been declared safe and clean.

So that leaves the question: what's wrong with the computer?

Can you let me know?

Here is what I was presented with.

Trojan Vundo.B was found by Norton and failed to be repaired. The computer was given to me to fix, I downloaded the fix turned off system restore changed the boot.ini to be in safemode on reboot. When it rebooted it hung up on the black safemode screen.

After attempting many things I took the HD out and plugged it into an old 98 system. I then ran Trojanhunter, spybot, adaware, cleanup, AVG most of which found and repaired items. I attempted to run the Vundo fix, Vundo was not found. I then changed the boot.ini per your unfinished thought and replaced the HD in the original computer.

The computer boots up very slow and lags a lot on opening programs. I have run Norton, trojanhunter, spybot, and adaware again after doing the updates (as well as windows updates). Nothing of consequense was found. I do not recall anything called Vundo or anything like that found. I am conserned that there is something hiding. If you think by the HJT log that everything looks ok, then I will put it back together and return it to a very happy lady.

In case I have not mentioned before :tazz: thank you so much for your time.

Normally Vundo files would have shown up in the WinPFind log.

You can try this and see if it makes a difference;

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
>From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Hi geekygirl,

Both logs look clean. Although I'm not very fond of the IPInsight cr@p it shouldn't be responsible for the slowdowns you described.

Have you tried alternatives for NIS and NAV ?

It doesn't seem to agree with some computers.

To be honest I don't even know what the IPInsight is. I doubt she uses it. The computer was a hand me down to her.

She just bought the Norton stuff. I may be able to train her on something else, but as she is not the best at computers I really don't want to change to much. I just got her trained on spybot and adaware although she does not understand really what they do.

I think I shall put it together and return it to her as is. Thank you so much for your help, I sure could not have done it without you.

You rock harder than well, Metallica. :tazz:

In the future should I have any problems with any malware, should I start a new thread? I am just asking as I was referred back to this thread even as it was a differant system?

Thanks again.

It is considered better to open a new thread for a new problem.
Just so we don't mix up different computers. :tazz:
