I have completed all preliminaries in the "You Must Read This Before Posting a Hijackthis Log" section, and I am still getting the Winfix popups. Windows XP SP2 installed before the infection set in. Here is the Hijackthis log:

You have the dreaded Vundo plus some malware and a Trojan. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. I feel obliged to inform you that there may be 3 different Vundo infections present; I can’t tell yet since they tend to mask each other. Do not be disheartened if we have to repeat procedures with subtle changes.

Firstly could you please disable CounterSpy from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll
• Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
• The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

What happened to the vundo fix text file? It is important I see that one.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please use SEARCH and find all instances of these three file names. They will have differing suffixes or file extensions to them for example BAK or INI or TMP etc.

Please delete all instances of them, but tell me what you found and where you found them.

I just completed the search for qqtwa, rtvwa and orqss files. The "search" function in Windows XP did not find any instances of any files with those names. I did select to have the search check system and hidden files. Was I supposed to find files by this name?

Yes you should have found something. Not to get too concerned about it, the Vundo log looks OK, but with 3 infections I don't wish to take any chances. Let's run a scanner to find out what is really lurking.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

You have Vundo B, which doesn't surprise me at all. This fix is slightly different to the last one, it takes care of the backwards file too.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

Things seemed to not go well this time. I ran the processes as directed. HiJackThis did not give me the "02-BHO" or the "020-Winlogon" entries that I was to select for fix. I saved a log of what it did give me so you can see it:

Because I did not find the specified entries to select, I selected nothing and pressed "Fix." It gave me an error message telling me that I had selected nothing to fix. So I closed HJT out and pressed the enter key to cause a forced reboot in vundofix. The machine did nothing for quite a while. I then did a manual reboot.

When the computer came back up, I ran a Cleanup and then rebooted again as the program directed. I then ran another HiJackThis log. It is as follows:

The new Vundo Fix appears to have worked OK.

However, you now have the third Vundo B infection to clear. This is typical of Vundo, not showing until the previous one is gone; it's why it is so hated.

You should be quite expert at this now.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Post a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Can I just make an observation as to why you are having problems. In fix 2, you had CounterSpy running, and in fix 3 you had Ewido Guard running.

These programmes, by their very nature are there to stop your registry from being altered, so you can delete all you want to, but they will be undone.

Please disable both of those programmes and run the fix again.
