It is still there. I may owe you an apology. I just looked through the string of our posts and realized that I neglected to tell you that I DO have other "users" on this machine. Could that be interfering with the fix? When Vundo ran, it showed that it could not delete the file because it was being used by another process.

Before running this sweep, I uninstalled - not just "disabled" but actually removed from my computer - things I thought might interfere with the registry, such as ewido, counterspy, panda, adaware, trojan hunter (most of the things we installed during this process). I did not uninstall my Norton Antivirus 2005.

Here is the HJT log:

Humour me and try the same fix logged on as a different user. Also, please check that you are running in safe mode. In safe mode, most files are not in use by anyone.

the vundofix log is:

Could not delete file.
Files Deleted sucessfully.

The last time I ran hjt, I highlighted the lines with the jkhhg and the ghhkj strings and clicked on "more information." It said something about, if the items were being reinstalled on restarts, then we could select the "delete on reboot" option or use killbox to get rid of the strings. I did not attempt this is I do not fully understand those operations.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Firstly, I think there is something wrong with your OS since you are unable to run a fix which is very common and easily run without errors.

I think that now is a good time to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
I am aware of the need to delete on reboot files in startup. We do all our fixes in safe mode to stop files from loading.

After doing this, please try the fix again, and let me know how you get on.

Aaarrgh!

I ran the scan. It seemed to go fine. I did not get any messages telling me otherwise. It took several minutes to run and then just ended.

I ran vundofix and hjt. No luck again. Here is the hjt log:

Here is the vundofix log:

Could not delete file.
Files Deleted sucessfully.

When vundofix runs, it gives me a message saying that it cannot delete the file because it is being used by another process. This baffles me because I thought that in safe mode nearly all of the processes are shut off.

While in safe mode, I did a ctrl-alt-delete and checked the processes that were running. Here is the list:

taskmgr.exe
explorer.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe
system
System Idle Process SYSTEM

Any other ideas? Should I provide you a hjt log from safe mode?

Thanks for being so patient, and sticking with me.

No change there.

Can you have a look at the User Accounts in the Control Panel. Please list the names and account types in your reply.

Account names are (using abbreviations - if you need full names let me know):

D Administrator (this one is mine and the one from which we have been making most of the fix attempts)
M Administrator
C Limited Account
S Limited Account
Guest Account is turned off

Thanks

Please change the M administrator account via User Accounts to a limited account status and reboot. Try the fix again from the only Admin logon left D yours.

I do not know what we can do next.

I changed M to a limited user and ran vundo and hjt in safe mode from D - administrator. I then ran cleanup after reboot. It does not seem to have worked.

Here is the hjt log:

Let's just try something else, a bit different.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

I am not sure if you got an email informing you of my reply since I posted when the USA based server was backing up and may have caught a glitch.

Anyway, from what I am hearing, it seems that others are having problems with Norton stopping the Vundofix from running. Apparently it is the script blockers that run in safe mode too. Before you run the previously mentioned WinPfind scan, try disabling Norton altogether and running the Vundofix.

Now I knew there was something I liked about Norton, uninstalling it :tazz:

Okay.

I have uninstalled Norton Antivirus from my system.

I ran vundofix and hjt in Safe Mode. It did not seem to work - I saw the same "cannot access file, being used by another process" message.

Here is the hjt log:

Let's try this:

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ghhkj.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqtwa.ini

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Where do we go from here?

Would "restoring" the machine to it basic from-the-factory software configuration clear out whatever it is that is blocking the deletion of those files? I would REALLY not like to do that, but if that is what it takes . . . .

Thanks for your help.

Let's not go as far as restoring yet.

Please get rid of your VundoFix altogether and then redownload a fresh version. Then try it again.

It appears that some of the downloads have been incomplete.

If the second downloaded VundoFix fails to work correctly, please list the files within the VundoFix folder.
