Lets try this next in the command prompt type this.

dir c:\explorer.exe /s>c:\explorer.txt ENTER

And let me know what happens.

nothing really-------------i could hear the hard drive but no change on desk top or task bar

Open a new note pad window and paste that text into it. Save that file as fix.bat and save as type all files. Save it somewhere you can access it easily.

Once its saved double click on fix.bat to run it.

Once you run it please post a new hijackthis log.

I ran the fix.bat file-------------I didn't notice anything relating to icons, desktop or taskbar.

IIRC-----------it said in the command prompt black box "1 file copied", I believe.

If you boot into safe mode do you hahve the taskbar and desktop icons?

To check reboot your computer and tap F8 while it is booting this should bring up a new menu. From that menu select safe mode.

Also did you install any new software or update any drivers around the time these problems started?

Yes-----------when in "Safe Mode" I do have icons and taskbar---------the only thing I downloaded was the beta version of Google's Desktop search which I un-installed shortly after having this problem.

Ok can you open the task manager and click file new task and type in msconfig.

On the services tab click hide all microsoft servcies and then list what is left here for me to look at.

Then click the Startup tab and list all of those here for me to review.
