Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Norton Internet Security 2005, ewido, Trend Housecall and MS Anti-Spyware all came up with clean scans.

Please let me know if I have any other infections, and how I can remove Block-Checker.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there CelestialTeardrop

Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Don't see any signs of it,

Download Blockrem from HERE
  • Unzip it to its own folder on your desktop.
  • Boot your computer to safe mode by rebooting and tapping the F8 button repeatedly until it brings up a boot menu.
From that menu, select Safe Mode by using the arrow keys to highlight it then pressing enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the Blockrem folder on your desktop and double-click blockrem.bat (this is the file with the gear icon) to run it.
  • Once it is running please follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Reboot
  • Rescan with Active, save the log form it please, Post it back here
  • Post a HijackThis log as well please.

I got these two messages (appeared in the lower right-hand corner of my screen above my clock) from Microsoft AntiSpyware just as I was opening firefox to type this post:

Internet Explorer WebBrowser alert

An Internet Explorer WebBrowser ({42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6}) has been added to Internet Explorer and has been automatically allowed. Microsoft AntiSpyware has determined this program to be free of known spyware.

and

Internet Explorer Explorer Bars alert

An Internet Explorer Explorer Bar ({C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}) has been added to your Internet Explorer and has been automatically allowed. Microsoft AntiSpyware has determined this program to be free of known spyware.

Can you please tell me what these bars are? I do not see any change in the way Internet Explorer looks.

Also, just a minor detail, but is it normal for the taskbar to get the "classic windows" look after rebooting to normal mode after using safe mode?

Thanks for all your help.

Just to make sure I do this correctly, I should delete the folder "MyWaySA" but which files are supposed to be in bold that I am to delete?

The only thing I could find when I ran HJT was R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = <http://mysearch.mywa...debar.jsp?p=DE> which I did not want to fix yet on account of the other missing parts.

Great job :tazz:

Go ahead and fix this with HJT

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.mywa...idebar.jsp?p=DE

Reboot,

Nice job your log is clean !
How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection

Download the following program, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster

Keep AD-Aware. and Spybot 1.3 handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
Click Start | Run | type in cleanmgr | OK

Let it scan your system for files to remove.

Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.

Press OK to remove them.

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here for XP

See Here for ME Name it clean or something like that,

Thank you so much for all your help!

The computer seems to be running fine, and all scans are coming up clean. I have Norton, Spyware Blaster, WinPatrol, Ad-Aware, Spybot, ewido, and MS Antispyware up and running at all times and I check for updates daily.

I'm so sorry to bother you again, but I have a few more questions:

1. Are there any files in the TEMP folder that should not be deleted, or can I empty out the folder completely?

2. Also, a few posts above, I mentioned two messages I got from MS Antispyware, and was wondering if you could tell me if they point to possible malware that got past the program:

"Internet Explorer WebBrowser alert

An Internet Explorer WebBrowser ({42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6}) has been added to Internet Explorer and has been automatically allowed. Microsoft AntiSpyware has determined this program to be free of known spyware."

and

"Internet Explorer Explorer Bars alert

An Internet Explorer Explorer Bar ({C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}) has been added to your Internet Explorer and has been automatically allowed. Microsoft AntiSpyware has determined this program to be free of known spyware."

3. Before I uninstalled the google toolbar, Panda ActiveScan used to freeze when it got to googletoolbar1.dll and had to be closed through the task manager. Closing the activescan through the task manager instead of the "stop scan" button (which was unresponsive) resulted in literally tens of thousands (I had 20,013 the first time this happened) of .tmp files being created in the folder containing the file on which the scan froze. Does this usually happen? I no longer use the google toolbar, but was just wondering anyway.

4. And just one minor detail, but I'm curious :tazz: When you reboot the comp. into safe mode (Windows XP), then restart it in normal mode, is the taskbar supposed to change appearance from the xp theme to the windows classic theme?

Thanks again!

edit:
What should I do with the following folders/programs on my desktop:
Silent Runners
Startup Programs (created by Silent Runners)
Blockrem folder
Backups folder (created by HiJackThis)

Your very welcome let me see if I can get to all your questions and answer them for you :tazz:
BTW no borther at all :)

1. Are there any files in the TEMP folder that should not be deleted, or can I empty out the folder completely?

Shouldn't be unless you saved some there for a reason, You may want to have a quick peek in there and make sure there is nothing there you recognize prior to cleaning out the folder You don't want to delete the Temp folder itself just the contents within it

2. Also, a few posts above, I mentioned two messages I got from MS Antispyware, and was wondering if you could tell me if they point to possible malware that got past the program:

I can't find any particular info on the items MicroSoft anti spyware has found,
But in reviewing your log I had you remove MySearch As this is a known untrusted program, Its deceptive on how it is installed on your machine and it also makes itself a bit difficult to remove,

Can't explain why that happens, But if you uninstalled google toolbar and you no longer have the problem, Its possible somehow google toolbar became corrupted I use Google toolbar (and love it) and never had any problems with Active scan.

4. And just one minor detail, but I'm curious  When you reboot the comp. into safe mode (Windows XP), then restart it in normal mode, is the taskbar supposed to change appearance from the xp theme to the windows classic theme?

You can set your apperance back to xp themes with no trouble ?

edit:

Silent Runners

You can go ahead and delete the following foders
Silent Runners
Startup Programs (created by Silent Runners)
Blockrem folder

For HJT,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt
Move HJT into this new folder please,
along with the back up folder,
Usually its ok to delete the back ups for HJT, but like to keep them around for a few weeks to make sure everythig is running fine they will do you no harm sitting in a folder, Following the steps above will get them off your desk top

I think I got them all :)

Yeah; I've emptied the folder before (not deleted it), and got a message saying some items could not be deleted because they were in use or some other reason, so I was wondering if there was something in its contents that would cause problems if deleted. I'll look though it before emptying.

Can't explain why that happens, But if you uninstalled google toolbar and you no longer have the problem, Its possible somehow google toolbar became corrupted I use Google toolbar (and love it) and never had any problems with Active scan.

I'll try reinstalling the toolbar now that the comp is clean and see if it happens again. I ran activescan for a while on my desktop while having the google toolbar, and everything went alright. The issue of ActiveScan freezing started only this week, on both my desktop and laptop (the logs in this thread were from my laptop, I have another post with the logs from my desktop floating somewhere around the board), so maybe it was something to do with activescan's new interface.

You can set your apperance back to xp themes with no trouble ?

Yes, I switched it with no trouble (I like both classic and xp, so it's no problem anyway), I was just wondering why it changed by itself. :)

I think I got them all  :tazz:

You may want to rebbot to safe mode and give them a cleaning if after you check into the folder and see nothing is there you want or need, In fact if you find something you want or need in there best to create a new folder for it and move it out of there

Ok, I just reinstalled the google toolbar on both my desktop and laptop, ran activescan, and everything went as it should.

My guess is that either the toolbar version 3.0.125.1 caused the scan to freeze (now it is version 3.0.126.3), or the updated Panda activescan had a few bugs or things that were fixed in the meantime (I noticed the interface changed again; a few days ago the scan showed the number of files being scanned, and the menu for choosing which devices to scan was toward the bottom of the screen; now, the number of files scanned no longer shows up, and the scan menu (my computer, floppy, etc) appears closer to the top of the screen). Otherwise, maybe block-checker (or whatever it was that blockrem fixed, since there were no actual traces of block-checker visible in any of the logs or the registry) froze the scan on the laptop, and some other malware froze it on the desktop (ewido found spyware.minibug and cleaned it).

As for the changed appearance of the taskbar/window panes/ect after rebooting from safe mode, that only seems to happen on the laptop; just tried it on the desktop and all was fine upon restarting. I'm thinking it might have something to do with my changing to a lower resolution from the original on my laptop, because in safe mode the icons and mouse look far larger then in normal mode. I'll switch back to the original higher resolution and see if that changes things in safe mode and report back...in case anyone else reading this is as obsessive as me when it comes to silly details on the computer. :tazz:

edit: nope, it's not the resolution; might just be some quirk of Dell's and their laptops (though not Dell desktops).
