Experiencing Winfixer 2005 loading and "running." Lots of pop-ups and computer freezes and won't come out of sleep mode with the click of a mouse.
HELP! Already tried McAfee and Spybot Search and Destroy. No luck.

Hi Sam,
I was able to remove the Winfixer Problem by running McAfee in Safe Mode. Now when I log on to my computer, I get a System Configuration Utility dialog box that says:

"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.

The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run evey time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on teh General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility."

Can you help me with this. I hate to change anything here. I'm not sure what it will do to my computer. Can you steer me in the right direction?

Sure can.

Click Start -> Run -> type in msconfig and hit enter.
Under Startup Selection, select Normal Startup.

Now reboot and you should be back to normal.


You may want to post a new hijackthis log so I can take a look. It is my understanding that Mcafee can not remove the Vundo trojan that causes the Winfixer issue.

I'll wait to set the msconfig back to normal until I hear from you next. (I thought the pop up screen for the config utility said something about undoing whatever was done if I switched it back to normal and I don't want it to reinstall the spyware file I had just deleted in safe mode.)
