Good job.

copy the part in bold below and save it as BHOrem.reg

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5B4AB8E2-6DC5-477A-B637-BF3C1A2E5993}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ext\CLSID]

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Then run regsrch.vbs for
{950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E}

Post the results.

Pieter,

I think I'm now quite confused. Was I supposed to execute ptocol.reg? I did and it said it couldn't update the registry. In any event here's the log:

Yes, you were supposed to execute ptocol.reg

Did you close as many windows as possible when you executed that and BHOrem.reg (especially IE) ?

Pieter,

Even on a reboot, executing ptocol.reg fails: "Some keys are open by the system or other processes". This is ptocol.reg

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
"CLSID"="{733AC4CB-F1A4-11d0-B951-00A0C90312E1}"

Change ptocol.reg to read:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
"CLSID"="{950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E}"=-

Maybe I was trying to do too much at once.

Pieter

I give up.

I asked my friend TonyKlein, who is a renowned registry wizard to see if I was doing something wrong and he suggested the last trial.

For the record you are not bothered by anything even remotely looking like a hijack, are you?

If so try running AdAware or Spybot (or MicroSoft AntiSpyware once the final version is released) and I'm sure in a few more updatwes they will get rid of the debris (cause that's what it is) for you.

I am sorry I couldn't help you further. :tazz:

Pieter

Pieter,

I can't thank you enough for your help. That isearch program was really aggravating and I had no ideal how to get rid of it.

I had mentioned yesterday a minor problem I have with occasional popup messages regarding NotifyAlert.exe. I noticed the topic being addressed in your forum but I can't figure out how I can read the solution???

Here's the message I get:

NotifyAlert.exe – Common Language Runtime Dbugging Services

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=)xbd8(3032),Thread id=0xc24(3108), Thread id=0xe80 (3712).

Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.

If I click CANCEL I get the following msg.

No debugger found.
Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to lauch a JIT debugger with the
Following command resulted in an error code of 0x2(2). Please check computer settings.

cordbg.exe !a 0xbd8

Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually.
Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debug request.

Again,
Thanks so much,
Ron

That may be curable. (would make me feel a bit more useful if I could at least manage that)
  • Download finditnt2000xp.zip.
  • Unzip the contents of finditnt2000xp.zip to a convenient location.
  • Navigate to the Find It NT-2K-XP folder and double-click on find.bat.
  • A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.
  • Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
  • Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post.

Pieter

Pieter,

Here's the log file. I know that NotifyAlert is something from Dell and has to do with obtaining updates.

Warning! This utility will find legitimate files in addition to malware.
Do not remove anything unless you are sure you know what you're doing.

Find.bat is running from: C:\HJT\NotifyAlertProblem\Find It NT-2K-XP
