Hi papa68! Welcome to G2G!
Can you get into SAFE MODE? (tap F8 about once a second as soon as you turn your computer on and keep doing it until you see the screen pop up letting you boot into Safe Mode). Once there, go to START-->PROGRAMS-->ACCESSORIES-->SYSTEM TOOLS-->SYSTEM RESTORE and try doing a restore to a date when you last remember the computer working correctly. It is best if you go back at least a couple days from when you last remember it working correctly. So if it last worked correctly on the 18th, then go back to at least the 15th or earlier.

You need to get a win98se boot disk, not winME, in case you need to format the disk. You can use any computer to make one here
www.allbootdisks.com
Note that the cd-rom drive letter is R:
Then you need to explore the drive with the disk and find the problem. Someone can help you.
