I need help I have three files left that I can not get rid of. Nortons finds them and so doesn't xoftspy, but nothing seems to be able to delete them. I also tried spybot, nothing.

I removed xoftspy as you recommended. I forgot to mention that my computer freezes sometimes also, I figured that it was the malware. Anyways, I ran cleanup it asked me to reboot, but I did not because it was not part of your instructions. See below the new Hijack log. Hello again Please DO reboot. After that, I'd like you to run a scan for me, just so we can make sure if anything is hiding from us.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Reboot into SAFE MODE . Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer begins to boot up. You will be taken to a screen where you can use your keyboard "arrow" keys to move the cursor and highlight "Safe Mode", then click the "enter" button.
• Once in Safe Mode, you are going to run Ewido as follows. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not "multi task" while Ewido runs. Please do not open/run ANYTHING else during the scan...this includes all files, programs, folders, games, etc. ONLY have Ewido running.
• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.


Reboot normally and post here with a copy of the report from Ewido please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

• Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.
• Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.
• Select "Delete on Reboot".
• Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

grrrrr. Ok. Let's try to manually do this. Reboot into Safe Mode, then navigate to these files one by one and try to delete them while in Safe Mode. Let me know of any errors or message you receive if they won't go.

Create a Startup List

* Open HiJackThis
* Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
* Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
* Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
* Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
* Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Deleting them in safe mode did not work, here is the error message.

Error deleting file or folder, can not delete temp: access denied, make sure the disk is not full or write protected, and that the file is not currently in use.

Wintools may have an entry in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If so, it may be easy to get rid of. If not, there are still ways to remove it from your system.

For either solution:

Restart your computer in Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as the machine begins to boot, then choosing "Safe Mode' From the menu that appears.

Once in Safe Mode:
Click on the Start Button, then Control Panel. Double-click on Administrative Tools then on Services.
Look for a service called Wintools for IE Service. double-click it to open, then click the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled.
(If the service is not there, no worries...all the better!)

Next, right-click on the Windows Taskbar and select Task Manager.
In the Processes tab, look for WToolsA.exe, WToolsS.exe and WSup.exe. If any or all of these exist, right-click on each one and select End Process Tree, and answer affirmatively to any confirmation questions.

At this point, you can check the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If there is an uninstaller for Wintools, try running it now. I would still recommend proceeding through the rest of this fix even if there is an uninstaller, however.

Now, please open a command prompt (Start button -> Run, type cmd and click "OK"). at the prompt, type
regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" then <ENTER>.
Then type exit to close the command prompt window.

Now, we can proceed to delete these directories, located at:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools <-- Delete the BOLD directory.
C:\Program Files\Toolbar <-- Delete the BOLD directory.

After that reboot normally, then post a fresh HijackThis log for review.

Good Morning Kat, I have checked all the places you suggested for the location of Wintools. But there is no sign of it except for those three files., at least I can't find it. I booted into safe mode, there were no entries in services for wintools. There were also no processes running. There was no wintools program for me to uninstall. Reboot into Safe Mode, (be SURE you are logged in as the Administrator/main account) and navigate to the folder where those files are. Right click on one of them, and choose "properties". THen click on the "Security" tab. You will see the list of owners and permissions (full control, read, execute, etc). For each permission, you have two options: allow and deny. If deny is checked..change that to 'allow', and then try to delete the file. Do the same thing for the other two. If they won't delete, please tell me exactly what is checked/enabled under pemissions for each of the three files. Also, while in safe mode, if the files won't go...try to delete the entire Temp folder itself. If it deletes, then click on File>New Folder and then rename the folder exactly to the name that you just deleted (Temp)
Let me know how this goes! Report anything you encounter if they still won't delete.

I think you have done it. Those files are gone. I had tried to change the permissions earlier in my misery, but the message was that they were system files. We must have finally got rid of whatever had control of them. I am running a nortons scan one more time to be sure but I think we (or you have done it). It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Prevention Programs:

• SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other Necessary Programs:

• A More Secure Browser
  Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
  There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
