I am running a Windows 98 machine with Netscape 7, using Charter internet. I had a security message that I needed to handle with Charter, they resolved the issue and emailed a couple of .exe files to install extra security. When attempting to download and\or oepn the files they will only open in Word. Whether I choose to Open the file directly, Save it to my desktop and then open it or Open with Default .exe it will only open in Word. I called Charter they said it must be a Netscape or Windows issue. I have searched the web and cannot find any information. Can you help?

Thank you,
RL Nelson

You might try going into folder options, filetypes, look for .exe files, if it opens with Word remove the association. If that doesn't do it you'll have to go into the registry, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and modify the key for the .exe file by deleting the default entry, which will be Word.exe in this case. Don't delete the key.
