I ended up watching the computer for about three hours last night and still nothing. And then Norton decided to pop up saying that a program was trying to access the Internet and basically blocked the scan pop-up that was originally on the screen. Also, I noticed last night that the clock in the bottom right-hand corner freezes to the time that Windows opened.

Someone on another forum instructed me to try to boot the system from the XP CD, thinking that it may be a problem with the registry. I tried following the instructions on Microsoft's website but the computer wouldn't boot from the CD; instead it just went straight to Windows. =\

k01nr01...

Being a bit stubborn, isn't it?

Use the install cd and try this REPAIR to your installation of XP. This procedure will not damage or change your current files or settings...it will just repair or replace damaged system files. You will be asked for your Installation CD and may be asked for your product key. Follow the instructions carefully...print them out if you can. Note: This option is not always available on OEM Recovery Cd's

Hopefully, you will not be prompted for your password. If you are, leave it blank and press "Enter".

At this point my dad and I have given up. We've tried everything suggested here but we haven't gotten anywhere. He ended up taking the tower into work today so some guy could recover all of the files, just in case. I don't know what the next step he's planning to take is, but if anything gets resolved, I'll be sure to post it here for future reference and whatnot. Thanks for trying, though!
