Good.

Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
  • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.05) from here.
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)[list]
    • "Automatically save logfile"
    • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
    • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
  • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
  • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
  • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
  • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
  • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
  • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
  • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
  • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
  • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
  • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
  • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
    • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
    • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
  • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
    • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
    • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
    • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
    • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
  • Now reboot into safe mode
  • Close all programs and restart ad-aware.
  • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
  • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
  • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
  • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Then run HijackThis and post a new log.

Pieter

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O1 - Hosts: auto.search.msn.com 127.0.0.1

Then reboot and run HijackThis again. If nothing has changed i'll need copies of these two files:
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
(to see if these are the originals)
Send them (preferably zipped) to pieterATwilderssecurity.org (replace AT with @)

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as actdesk.reg

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSetActiveDesktop"=dword:40

Doubleclick the file you made and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.
Reboot and let us know.

Can you try if installing SP2 solves the error?
I think MSHTML.DLL may have been replaced or corrupted. Installing SP2 gives you the latest version of that file.

Hi, my freind is experiencing a problem with his computer. It started on msn messenger when he accepted an msdos file which semed to look like a game of some sort but it wasnt. It stays in his c drive and there is about 9 msdos file icons showing. He has tryed deleting them in the recycle bin but they just come back again. Everitme he logs onto msn messegner, the computer starts going a bot crazy, it send the files to people on his msn. Everytime he trys to open a file eg a microsoft word file, the timer appears, everything starts flashing and he cant click on anything. This is beginning to happen a lot. Alos, the buttons on the mouse switch over for a short period of time.So i advised him to download ad ware and follow the instructions i was given earlier. He then ran a scan and produced this logfile: Could you please try to help...thankyou

I saw at least four viruses without really looking very hard.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Config 32bit] mscnfg32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] wuamgrd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft DirectX] niks123.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lsasss.exe] C:\WINDOWS\lsasss.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [skynetave.exe] C:\WINDOWS\skynetave.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Services] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\uootqdc.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Isass] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMsnW] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Config 32bit] mscnfg32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] wuamgrd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft DirectX] niks123.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Isass] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Anti] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [NvMsnW] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Config 32bit] mscnfg32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft DirectX] niks123.exe

O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.co...up1.0.0.8-2.exe

O23 - Service: Windows Update Service - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuamgrd.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing)

Then reboot and do an online virusscan for example here: http://housecall.antivirus.com/

If Norton was up-to-date it will have to be reinstalled after all the viruses are gone.

Regards,

Pieter

Can you boot into safe mode and look in the Event viewer?
See if you can find an error occurring at the time the computer froze.
Let me know the ID number of that error and the description.

Hang on. Maybe this is a conflict between your own firewall and the built-in Windows firewall.

Follow theinstructions how to disable it here, after you have made sure your own firewall is up and running:
